Makkum on the IJsselmeer combines days at the beach, wind on the water, paved paths and historic culture. When choosing a holiday apartment in Makkum, you can tailor your stay according to whether shared activities, experiences in nature or discoveries in the town take centre stage. The distinctive features lie in clearly distinguishable experiences rather than in a single type of holiday.

Beach and water sports on the IJsselmeer

At De Holle Poarte beach, you can expect a family beach with play equipment and a promenade. The water there is shallow. Makkum’s location on the IJsselmeer often provides enough wind for kitesurfing and windsurfing; the shallow water at the beach is particularly suitable for beginners. Important for planning: at the Makkum kitesurfing spot, kitesurfing is permitted from October to April. During the summer season, it is not permitted on the beach or in the water because of the high number of bathers.

Sailing and trips on the water

Makkum also offers special opportunities on the water beyond kitesurfing. On the 100-year-old fishing vessel Blazer TX33, visitors can sail, help set the sails and even take the helm themselves. It Preamke also offers 80-minute trips on an open barge through the inland waters, including from Makkum. This makes it possible to combine active and more tranquil experiences on the water.

Paths and nature around Makkum

The Kuiertocht Makkum is fully paved and suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. This makes it an easily accessible way to explore the town on foot. The Makkumer Súdwaard offers a different natural focal point: it is the middle of three originally vegetated sandbanks surrounded by shallow water. Orchids grow on the Makkumer Súdwaard.

Culture between the Waag and the stage programme

De Waag van Makkum houses an exhibition by Stichting Ald Makkum; visitors can also view the Waag’s clockwork there. The building illustrates Makkum’s historical importance as a trading town. The Cultureel Podium Makkum provides cultural variety with music, cabaret and small-scale performance events, workshops and interesting presentations. The season runs from September through and including June. The former Koninklijke Tichelaar factory in Makkum is also part of the town’s history. It is no longer accessible because the company has moved, but its façade is worth seeing.

Which holiday apartment in Makkum suits your plans?

When choosing your accommodation, you can use your preferred travel rhythm as a starting point: De Holle Poarte beach and the shallow-water sports opportunities favour active days on the IJsselmeer, while the Kuiertocht, the Súdwaard and the cultural sites offer different focal points. A holiday apartment in Makkum therefore provides a suitable base for shaping your days between water, nature and the town’s history.
