Kûbaard reveals its character within a compact area: the village centre is compact, while the modest development along dykes and canals extends into the surrounding landscape. To the east of the village centre, the church stands in an extensive cemetery; tall lime trees line the church grounds. When choosing a holiday rental in Kûbaard, this village centre is a clear point of reference if you want to combine the villagescape, architectural heritage and paths through the landscape.

Church and architectural heritage in Kûbaard

Kûbaard church has been a Dutch Rijksmonument since 17 December 1971. It is a hall church with a five-sided chancel. In 1856, Willem Hardorff built a new mechanical slider-chest organ for the Hervormde Kerk in Kûbaard. During restoration work in 2004, 18 gravestones were discovered in the church; two of them are among the oldest in Fryslân and date from around 1340. The church can be rented for half-day use; for this, you must contact the church wardens.

Berkwerterleane 1 is a well-preserved Stelphoeve farmstead with a dairy cellar on the right-hand side of the front façade, recognisable by three windows with shutters. Berkwerterleane 2 is a farm with a transversely positioned front house beneath a hipped roof and two corner chimneys with decorated panels. Towards Swarte Beyen, one side of the road is lined with characteristic detached village houses dating from around 1900, alongside the old, monumental Slachtedyk.

Slachtedyk: landscape on foot and by bicycle

The 42-kilometre-long Slachtedyk is managed by It Fryske Gea as a natural and cultural-historical feature in the landscape. Almost the entire Slachtedyk is freely accessible to walkers and cyclists. Near Kûbaard, the Bidlerstien is an associated boundary stone on the Slachtedyk. In this way, the route combines movement through the landscape with distinctive traces of local history.

Cycling routes and a running event

The culinary cycling route “Eetbaar Fryslân: foodroute Wommels - Kubaard” is 64 kilometres long. Near Kûbaard, the Kaats Route follows cycling route junctions 25 and 6. The two routes each have a different focus: one combines cycling with culinary themes, while the other uses the Frisian junction network.

The Kûbaarder Hurdrindei has been held for more than two decades on the first Saturday in October as a sporting running event for people of all ages. The run generally leads from Kûbaard via the Slachtedyk to Wommels and back to Kûbaard. Thus, alongside walks and cycling tours, a recurring local sporting event is also part of the village’s character.
