The terp village of Jannum originated long before the beginning of our era and is designated as a protected villagescape. The church of Jannum is a Romanesque-Gothic hall church situated on a dwelling mound. This combination of a very ancient settlement history, a protected village character and a distinctive building makes Jannum interesting for travellers who also wish to take the character of their holiday destination into account when choosing a holiday apartment.

Church, Church Museum and local history

Since 1947, the Jannum Church Museum has been housed in the church; the building is no longer used as a church. This gives your stay a clear cultural focus that is closely connected to the building itself. The dwelling mound, the Romanesque-Gothic hall church and the museum represent different chapters of Jannum’s history, without the village having to be reduced to a single experience.

Open clay landscape and Flieterpen

The surroundings of Jannum lie in the clay region on the north-western side of the Ee in Noardeast-Fryslân. It is an open, expansive historic cultural landscape whose relief is characterised by terpen and lower-lying ditches. Jannum is one of the Flieterpen, artificially raised refuge mounds made from waste, on which people sought protection in earlier wet periods. Terpen, ditches and the open expanse give the surroundings their distinctive landscape context.

Jannumer cheese and farm shop

Regional food culture is also among the specific discoveries to be made in Jannum. The milk from Van Fûgelsang’s own Jersey cows forms the basis of Jannumer cheese. The Van Fûgelsang farm shop offers, among other things, Jannumer cheese, ice cream and “honest meat”. Those who choose accommodation with a holiday apartment in Jannum can plan this local connection as a focus alongside culture, landscape and outdoor activities.

Historic trails around Jannum

Hiking route 43 Waaxens–Jannum is 7 km long and takes approximately 1.5 hours. It runs along the Holwerder Vaart to the Holwerdertille bridge; there it is near the Dokkumer Ee and approximately 1 km from Jannum.

In addition, the fourth stage of the Klooster Claercamppad leads to Jannum along a gently rising brick road. The different route lengths and approximate duration details help you compare the trails according to your preferred daily rhythm. This allows travellers with different interests to weigh up culture, landscape and longer or shorter walking sections without reducing the village to a single route.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Jannum, you can therefore first decide on your focus: the church and the Church Museum, the open cultural landscape with its terpen and ditches, regional products at Van Fûgelsang, or historic trails such as routes 43 and 44 and the Klooster Claercamppad. Jannum brings these themes together within a small area, providing a clear basis for your personal travel planning.
