The Hegebeintum terp as an impressive landmark

The Hegebeintum terp reaches 8.80 metres above NAP, making it the highest terp in the Netherlands. In Noard-Fryslân, Hegebeintum is also home to a well-preserved terp; the area is well suited to walking and cycling.

Archaeology that brings history to life

The Archaeological Support Centre in Hegebeintum is the oldest of the eleven archaeological support centres in Fryslân. A permanent exhibition focuses on the terp landscape of Fryslân and the terps. A twelve-metre-long core sample is particularly vivid: it is displayed at the Archaeological Support Centre and covers the entire rear wall of the information centre. This makes it possible to see how deeply the history of the landscape reaches into the soil.

Historic places and special details

You will also encounter striking reminders of the past outside the Archaeological Support Centre. The oldest records of Harsta State date from 1511. The garden of Harsta State is known for its stinzen flora. The Protestant Church of Hegebeintum is also home to one of the richest collections of mourning boards in the Netherlands. Each of these different places has its own emphasis: here the focus is on garden history, there on religious remembrance culture, and elsewhere on the development of the terp landscape.

The terp landscape between manual labour and the present day

On the north-eastern side of the Hegebeintum terp, you can see a realistic reconstruction of the excavation process. It includes iron tipping wagons on rails, which were used to transport soil away from the terp. The terp itself was built up by generations of coastal residents using clay, manure and household waste. Another contrast between past and present can be seen on the Hegebeintum–Blije–Terp fan de Takomst route: it leads from Hegebeintum via a Kwelderpad trail to the Terp fan de Takomst, a modern terp completed in 2022.
