The 43.9-kilometre “Rondje Lauwersmeer” cycling route is also available. Nature experience in Lauwersmeer National Park

The Lauwersmeer area has officially been a national park since 2003. From TOP Oostmahorn, you can go directly into the area of Lauwersmeer National Park. The 2.5-hour boat trip on the Vlinderbalg passes through Lauwersmeer National Park. The 2.5-hour duration of the Vlinderbalg trip gives this nature experience a fixed time frame.

Cultural-historical traces by the water

The Waddentour is a tourist cultural-historical route that showcases local history and the valuable surrounding area. It can be started at TOP Oostmahorn, where parking is available. In the villages, the route offers walks along notable historic buildings. At the historic buildings, information panels on the façade or in the garden provide information about the respective sites.

Several places in Oostmahorn itself also tell stories of former functions and connections. The PTT Wisselstation is a repeater station dating from 1950 and was built in the style of a Danish farmhouse. It once played an important role in telephone communication between the Netherlands and Scandinavia. The Kruitmagazijn Oostmahorn is an old powder magazine dating from the early 19th century. It recalls the period when a coastal battery stood here to defend the Wadden Sea against privateers and enemy ships. Oostmahorn played an important role as a defensive post on the Lauwerszee.

After 1945, De Skâns-Oostmahorn was the home port of the ferry to Schiermonnikoog.
