Eanjum came into being when people built up a terp on a salt-marsh ridge to escape the influence of tides and storm surges. Behind the church, the densely built-up streets Tsjerkepaed and Foarstrjitte, along with the side paths, reveal the roughly radial structure of the terp. This allows you to encounter a villagescape whose form is directly connected to its history of origin.

The Michaëlkerk preserves parts of the north wall and west side of a tuff-stone church built around 1100, including an integrated tower in the form of a so-called reduced westwork. The terp, listed under monument number 45897, dates from the 5th to 7th centuries and is partly protected. The church and terp thus offer two different historical perspectives: a preserved church building and an early settlement form.

Culture and milling history in Anjum

De Eendragt was rebuilt in 1889 from parts of two dismantled mills from Leeuwarden as an octagonal grain and husking mill. Its exhibition room houses the Anjum Mill Museum. The De Eendragt Mill Museum is located in a grain and husking mill and offers insights across six levels. The site thus combines the history of reconstruction with a museum experience extending over several levels.

The impressive Ny Holdinga farmstead is also situated on grounds almost completely surrounded by ditches. This area formerly belonged to Holdingastate, the most important state in Anjum. The complex therefore represents another specific aspect of the village's historic landscape.

Nature and water around Eanjum

The Eanjumerkolken nature area is located near Eanjum. It covers 141 hectares and features two cultural-historical elements: duck decoys and scattered drinking ponds. The area is not freely accessible, but it can be viewed from the surrounding roads. Excursions in this area are also possible.

In the surroundings of Eanjum, the De Zoutkegel observation tower stands on the Súd Ie waterway near the Eanjumer Kolken nature area, between Eanjum and Ie. It is freely accessible to walkers, cyclists and water sports enthusiasts. The Súd Ie SUP and canoe route is 12 kilometres long in one direction. When planning a day on the water, the scale of the tour can be realistically assessed based on this distance.

Paths with an important time period

The Bonifatius Kloosterpad is also part of planning active days: on Loop 2, the section between waypoints 95 and 80 is inaccessible during the breeding season from 15 March to 15 July. Anyone wishing to include this section in their plans should take this date restriction into account when planning their own trip.
