Jirnsum is located as a terp village on the River Boarne and combines the Frisian landscape with numerous routes by water and land. The Jirnsumer Syl connects the village with the former River Moezel. The Prinses Margriet Kanaal also runs along Jirnsum and provides access by water. For travelling to Jirnsum, the village is close to the A32, Grou-Jirnsum railway station and several bus stops.

Waterways and routes through the landscape

Boat routes from Jirnsum include the journey to Grou via the Kromme Grou and continuing via Reduzum into the Lege Geaën. Moorings are available at the larger marinas on the outskirts of Jirnsum and in the village centre at the Wiide Steech.

Jirnsum has walking and cycling routes along the water and through the Frisian landscape. The 37.7-kilometre Akkrum–Terherne–Poppenwier–Jirnsum cycling route uses two ferries. On the way from Friens to Jirnsum, the route follows the winding Beslingadijk, an old medieval sea dike of the former Middelzee inlet. Along the cycling route, historical photographs of the buildings along the route can be viewed in Jirnsum.

For shorter outings, the Jirnum–Oude Schouw circular route is approximately 3 kilometres long and takes about half an hour. The Jirnsum–Friens–Jirnsum circular route starts at the Mauritiuskerk and is approximately 6 kilometres long. Jirnsum is also located on the Koningspad XL, a route consisting of 11 long-distance hiking stages, and is included in stages 6 and 7. The Acht van Grou cycling route also starts in Jirnsum.

The Mauritiuskerk is a municipal monument dating from 1877. Its eclectic architectural style combines Neo-Romanesque, Neoclassical and Gothic Revival elements. Boerderij de Leare at Learewei 20 provides another historical accent: it is a Rijksmonument and was originally a longhouse type. A Frisian barn was built above Boerderij de Leare in 1663.

A war memorial in Irnsum commemorates the war victims who came from Irnsum or lost their lives there. It is located at the intersection of Kerkebuurt and Rijksweg. At Rijksweg 89 stands a building that was formerly an inn and ferry house and was known locally as Het Zwarte Paard. At the rear, it had a mooring for ships operating scheduled freight services.

Religious history is also present in Jirnsum. The Jabikspaad is a marked pilgrimage route bearing the scallop-shell symbol. The Jirnsumer Moeting pilgrimage monument was made from old monastery bricks. A remnant of the former terp of Jirnsum has been preserved in the cemetery at Kerkebuurt.

The Doopsgezinde Kerk, also known as Fermanje, was built in 1684. The former Doopsgezinde Kerk (Fermanje) is a visible historical monument in Jirnsum and recalls centuries of religious life, tolerance and community spirit in the village.
