Aldeboarn combines water, peat meadows, peat cuttings and nearby forests with a multifaceted local history. The village developed in the early Middle Ages along the Boarn and grew into a trading and administrative centre for the region.

Culture and local history in Aldeboarn

The tower of the Doelhôftsjerke was built in 1737. The church also houses an organ built by Lambertus van Dam in 1779, a pulpit dating from the time of construction, a covered gentlemen’s pew from the 17th century and historic funerary monuments. Those interested in architectural history, crafts and past ways of life will find several different points of connection in one place.

The De Waach Museum also focuses on Aldeboarn’s development. It presents the history of the village through 24 dioramas. The dioramas depict occupations, crafts and trades that were practised in the village around 1864. The Memorial Museum ’40-’45 presents a different historical focus and displays vehicles, clothing, ammunition and personal items from the Second World War. Together, the two museums offer different perspectives on local history and the more recent past.

The villagescape combines different forms of design and heritage. Oldeboorn is designated as a protected village setting. On the southern side of Aldeboarn, the bridge over the Boarn features a large graffiti artwork. The Doarpskuier passes characteristic buildings, the Waag building and the Doelhôfkerk, linking these stops in its own exploration of the village.

Cycling, walking and boating

Aldeboarn offers several clearly distinct options for active days. The “Natuurlijk Aldeboarn” cycling route leads from Aldeboarn to the De Deelen nature reserve and back, combining culture, nature and history. It starts at TOP Aldeboarn. There is a slipway next to the TOP; a marina for visiting water sports enthusiasts is located nearby, so the TOP can be reached by boat.

This creates two different options for planning the day: the cycling route leads out to the De Deelen nature reserve, while the Doarpskuier passes characteristic buildings, the Waag building and the Doelhôfkerk. At TOP Aldeboarn, cycling and water-based activities can be combined in the same day’s plans without changing the starting point. At TOP Aldeboarn, you can park your car and cycle, walk or go boating from there in the rural surroundings. Depending on your plans for the day, this allows you to combine historical sightseeing, a cycle tour or time on the water.
