Holiday apartment in Tiendeveen: forests, canals and trails

Tiendeveen combines surroundings characterized by forests with hiking trails, cycling routes, golf and a multifaceted canal history. The northern side of the village in particular is surrounded by several forests.

Forested landscape and trails around Tiendeveen

Kremboong Forest lies north of Tiendeveen and is a distinctive wooded landscape feature. It has not been managed for years, allowing nature to develop freely. The nearby forest is freely accessible to walkers. The Oude Diep hiking trail also passes through Kremboong.

Longer routes also pass through Tiendeveen. The signposted 13-kilometre hiking route “Naar Siberië (en weer terug)” runs through the village before returning to Hoogeveen. Around 25 percent of the route follows unpaved paths, while the remainder follows paved paths. The different surfaces along the 13-kilometre route can be taken into account when planning footwear and breaks during the day. The 66-kilometre Randje-Drenthe Route 4 Zuidwolde also passes through Tiendeveen. It is not signposted and can be downloaded via its route page. The differing route lengths are therefore relevant when planning a day trip and choosing the route in question.

Golf and expansive views

Golfbaan Martensplek has an 18-hole course and a par-3 course. Anyone may play golf there, regardless of age or golfing experience. The golf course has a park-like character with numerous bodies of water and expansive views, and is surrounded by the De Goudplevier nature reserve. Golfbaan Martensplek welcomes guests and offers activities related to golf all year round.

Canals, peat history and distinctive buildings

The Linthorst Homankanaal was dug to open up Midden-Drenthe and promote the cultivation of the land. It was opened to shipping in 1926. After the canal was built, the centre of Tiendeveen developed at its intersection with the Drijbersche Hoofdvaart. At this intersection, the development of the village centre and the construction of the J.C. Rahderschool are connected with the history of the canal. The Linthorst Homankanaal is no longer a navigable waterway today. After shipping was discontinued in 1966, the swing bridges there were fixed in place.

The history of the village also reaches back to peat extraction. Jan Coenraad Rahder founded the Valkenheim peat factory there, which operated from 1863 to 1885. The J.C. Rahderschool was built at the intersection. Its name refers to the Amsterdam peat entrepreneur Jan Coenraad Rahder. A bridge near Tiendeveen has a movable section made of riveted iron.

Stage 25 of the Westerborkpad from Hoogeveen to Kremboong passes through a landscape originally characterized by raised bogs, with old peat colonies such as Tiendeveen.
