Hollandscheveld Between Forest and Village History

Hollandscheveld combines nature experiences with an unusually tangible past. The canal village was established in the 17th century, after the Hollandsche Compagnie reclaimed the raised bog area east and south of Hoogeveen. At that time, an extensive canal system was used to transport peat and drain the land. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Hollandscheveld will therefore find a place where the landscape and settlement history are closely connected to the village’s visible themes.

Trails for Active and More Relaxed Days

In the Hollandscheveld woodland area, there is an unmarked 6-kilometre hiking trail. The Schoonhoven recreation area also has the inclusive family Beleefpad ’t Opgaonde. The route, which is more than two kilometres long, has wheelchair-accessible paths and is also suitable for walking frames and pushchairs. This makes it possible to accommodate different ideas of what a stay should involve: you can plan a longer hike or choose a route whose paths are explicitly designed for different mobility needs.

The 56-kilometre cycling route “Rond Hoogeveen” is offered in connection with the Hollandscheveld woodland area. The different route lengths give you clear guidance for planning your day when you want to choose between a short hike, a cultural-historical village tour or a more extensive cycling trip.

Village Route and Church as Historical Highlights

The cultural-historical hiking route “Allee” covers around 5 kilometres through Hollandscheveld and a further approximately 5 kilometres through the forests around the Schoonhoven recreation area. Along the route are 11 information boards, each telling a story about the village’s past.

One of the notable buildings is the Hervormde Kerk in Hollandscheveld. The neoclassical hall church has a façade tower dating from 1851 and was inaugurated on 26 December 1851. In 1965, it was designated a Rijksmonument, meaning a Dutch national monument. Its furnishings include an organ with a Great Organ and Oberwerk, built by J. Proper in 1910.

Remembrance, Art and Regional Destinations

The memorial “De Kaars”, erected in 1995, commemorates all victims of the Second World War in this area. The names are displayed on the pedestal, which was partly formed from a propeller blade of Wilfred Still’s Lancaster bomber. Also located in Hollandscheveld is the artwork “Op ’t Hoekie”, which is associated with Cilie de Nevelhekse. The erratic boulder “De Kei” commemorates the fact that Dutch people bought into the Compagnie van de 5000 Morgen in 1631.

The Bethel church is located in the immediate vicinity of Hollandscheveld. In the wider regional area are Oldegaerde Castle, Fort De Katshaar, Kasteel Eerde Castle, Koolhaar Park and Boswachterij Staphorst Park. Boswachterij Ruinen Park is located near Hollandscheveld; the Breiberg hill is also nearby. These varied destinations add further regional points of interest to the trails and historical sites.

Choose a Holiday Apartment Based on Your Preferred Travel Pace

For your holiday apartment in Hollandscheveld, you can therefore first consider which focus suits your stay: forest and cycling, a family-oriented route with particularly accessible paths, or village history with a church, information boards and memorial sites. The combination of shorter and longer activities leaves room for different daily rhythms, without requiring you to commit to just one way of exploring.
