Hunebed D34 can be reached from Odoorn via the Valtherweg towards Valthe, followed by a right turn onto the Hunebedweg.

Hunebed D35 lies on the northern edge of the Valtherbos. Hunebed D35 can be reached from the direction of Klijndijk via the Melkweg and a sandy track branching off to the right. Hunebedden D36 and D37 lie a few metres apart on spacious grounds with large trees at the edge of the Kampervenen valley; together they are also known as “De Valther Tweeling”.

History that remains visible in the Valtherbos

The Valtherbos was once heathland and was planted with trees as part of a job-creation programme in the 1930s. During the Second World War, an Onderduikershol was dug between Valthe and Emmen and inhabited by Jewish people in hiding. A total of sixteen Jewish people hid in the Onderduikershol Valtherbos, in varying groups.

The Hunebedden Valtherbos walking route passes megalithic tombs and other traces of the past in the Valtherbos. The “Kids in het spoor van de mammoet” walk leads through the ancient Valtherbos to the Onderduikershol, a place with a moving wartime history, and past the three Hunebedden D35, D36 and D37. Hunebed D35 lies about 100 metres from this route.

The Randje-Drenthe Route 7 Valthe starts and ends at the sports hall in Valthe. It passes through Valthe, a village centred around a village green. The Flinten cycling route passes through Valthe with its village green and old Saxon farmhouses. In 1818, Valthe became known through the discovery of the Valtherbrug, which dates from Roman times. The wooden causeway through the peatlands between Ter-Apel and Valthe associated with the Valtherbrug was probably constructed as early as around 5,000 years ago.
