Culture and history right in Gasselternijveen

The Protestant Church in Gasselternijveen contains a protected organ by Van Oeckelen dating from 1900. The Damklok is located on the Dam; it dates from 1931 and was donated to the municipality by the village population.

Gasselternijveen's history of shipping is also significant. In 1913, the village was the fourth-largest seaport in the Netherlands based on the number of ships registered there; this explicitly did not apply to tonnage. Gasselternijveen received its first shipyard as early as 1849, and a second was added in 1861. The Oostermoer potato starch factory opened on the eastern side of the village in 1903.

Roelof Reiling, who lived at the Reiling Hoeve, was one of the first seven Baptists in the Netherlands to be baptized in 1845. The Gasselternijveen Village Walk is a 10-kilometre hiking route and offers a clearly defined option for an active day. In addition, Bloemendellen, Het Zwanemeer, Gieten Forestry and Anloo Forestry are located in the vicinity of Gasselternijveen.
