Discover Orhei: Culture, History and Landscape

Orhei combines distinctive buildings, Moldovan history and a varied landscape along the Răut. Churches, Monuments and a Turbulent History

Among the city’s defining buildings is the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius, built between 1632 and 1636. Its depiction appears on the reverse of Moldova’s 5-leu banknote. The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas is located in the centre of Orhei and was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Together with the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, it offers different perspectives on the city’s religious architectural history.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is one of the few neo-Gothic buildings in all of Moldova. The church was returned to Orhei’s remaining Catholic community in 2005 and reopened in 2008 after extensive restoration. Also noteworthy is the Old Believer Russian Orthodox Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan. It is a nationally significant architectural monument protected by the state.

In the Zemstvo administration building, deputies from Orhei voted on the Bessarabian Union motion on 25 March 1918. The building itself is a historical and architectural monument from the 19th century. Another reminder of the city’s history is the monument to Vasile Lupu, created in 1937. The bronze sculpture was made by the Romanian sculptor Oscar Han.

Museum, Jewish Cemetery and Regional Identity

The Orhei Museum of History and Ethnography was founded in February 1969 and has the status of a nationally significant historical and architectural monument from the 20th century. It is housed in a former villa that belonged to the architect Mircea Bengulescu. The collection comprises more than 20,000 exhibits. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to historical and archaeological research in the Orhei district.

The Jewish Cemetery of Orhei is also one of the places where the city’s history can be explored in a particularly distinctive way. The site is divided into sectors; the names of the identified deceased are listed alphabetically in a register. For travellers interested in culture, a visit to the museum can thus be combined with other historical sites, without limiting the stay to a single era.

Nature, Paths and Shared Outings

The Răut River runs through the municipality of Orhei and contributes to the creation of an attractive natural landscape. For a more relaxed day, Orhei’s Public Garden is a good option. It covers approximately 7 hectares and has new paths and pavements as well as more than 70 benches. This allows you to alternate between more intensive cultural experiences and relaxing breaks.

The OrheiLand family and cultural leisure park opened on 1 June 2018. The date is part of the park’s history and can be taken into account as a cultural and family-oriented aspect of the trip when planning your journey. For travel by road, National Road R6 connects Orhei with Chișinău and other towns to the north.
