Sannat: Nature, Trails and Culture in Gozo

Sannat combines impressive landscapes with visible traces of history. In the southwest of Gozo lies the protected area “Rdumijiet u L-Inħawi ta’ Ta’ Ċenċ”, which belongs to the municipality of Sannat. Anyone planning a trip where nature, hiking trails and culture can all have their place will discover different facets of a destination here, without having to limit themselves to just one type of experience.

Ta’ Ċenċ: Cliffs, Garigue and Remarkable Birdlife

The cliffs of Ta’ Ċenċ are the highest cliffs on Gozo. They are also home to the largest concentration of Scopoli’s shearwaters in the Maltese Islands. Ta’ Ċenċ is also one of two known breeding sites of the European storm petrel in the Maltese Archipelago. The protected area therefore has particular importance for birdlife and gives the landscape a clear focus on nature and observation.

The character of the plateau includes the garigue landscape typical of Malta. This barren, rocky landscape differs markedly from classic cultivated landscapes and makes Ta’ Ċenċ a distinctive destination for anyone who wants to combine geological formations, open spaces and the island’s wildlife during their trip. The Hanżira Valley is a natural gorge that separates Ta’ Sannat from Xewkija and forms another geographical landmark in the surrounding area.

Historical Traces on the Plateau and in the Village

Sparse remains of the L-Imramma temple can be found on the Ta’ Ċenċ plateau. There are also three dolmens. The dolmens and the menhir near Ta’ Ċenċ are still visible. These remnants give the landscape a historical dimension that is directly connected with the open surroundings.

St Margaret’s Church is also part of Sannat’s history. Construction of the present church began in 1718 on the site of a smaller church. It was first consecrated in 1755; following structural alterations, it was consecrated again in 1868. The altarpiece in St Margaret’s Church was painted by Stefano Erardi. Another historical detail is Queen Elizabeth II’s visit in 1951 to Sannat’s lace-making centre.

Hiking Trails and Discoveries near Ta’ Sannat

At the edge of Ta’ Sannat, hiking trails run along the impressive limestone cliffs. Along these paths, visitors can discover a variety of wildlife and endemic plants. Anyone who enjoys dividing their days between landscape and culture can include the trails near Ta’ Sannat and the historical traces on the Ta’ Ċenċ plateau in their travel plans.

Two traditional kilns stand along the road from Ta’ Sannat towards Mġarr ix-Xini. Local stone was fired in them and processed into lime powder. Such tangible evidence of local work adds a craft aspect to the nature and cultural themes.
