Qala Between Valleys, Rocky Coast and Culture
Accommodation in Qala
Qala combines a distinctive geological feature with deep valleys and a rugged rocky coast. It is the only village on the Maltese Islands where deposits from all five layers of Maltese rock can be found. Qala also has the highest concentration of deep valleys on the islands. Its geology and terrain therefore offer two different themes for a stay: you can focus on the rock formations and valleys, rather than getting to know Qala only through individual sights.
Geology, Valleys and Coast
Apart from a few sheltered bays, including the popular Hondoq Bay, Qala’s coastline is rugged and rocky. The bay is just a short distance from the centre of Qala, making it a convenient point of reference for days when you want to combine the village and the coast. The il-Qala Belvedere offers views of Comino and Malta. Qala therefore brings together a sheltered stretch of coast and a viewpoint overlooking two islands, offering two different perspectives on the landscape.
Hondoq Bay and Water Activities
Swimming, snorkelling and diving are possible in Hondoq Bay; conditions vary seasonally. Jet skiing, kayaking, water skiing and stand-up paddleboarding are also available there. Availability from providers may change. If a particular activity is important to your trip, check the conditions or availability in advance.
The “HONDOQ IR-RUMMIEN WALK” route also includes a visit to the bay. For directions, the Kuncizzjoni stop on bus route 303 can serve as a reference point: Hondoq Bay is about a 15-minute walk from there. Check the timetable before travelling. Another coastal point of interest is Għar Minka cave, which can be reached by boat; this option may depend on conditions.
History and Art
Saint Anthony’s Battery stands at Ras il-Qala and was built in 1732. Qala residents also call it It-Trunciera. The Immaculate Conception Chapel, dating from 1575, offers a different historical perspective. Its main attraction is an altarpiece attributed to Federico Barocci di Urbino. The battery and the chapel thus offer different perspectives on Qala: the military-historical name of a structure and an older religious building with an attributed work of art.
Which focus suits your stay?
When looking for a holiday apartment in Qala, you can start by considering which side of the village you want to shape your days. Hondoq Bay is the main point of reference for water activities; it is just a short distance from the centre and is also part of the walking route mentioned above. If you are more interested in the landscape, the deep valleys, rocky coast and views from the belvedere offer different points of interest. For a cultural focus, the battery and chapel each have their own historical details. This comparison can help you decide on the pace of your holiday and tailor your search for a holiday apartment to the experiences that interest you in Qala.
