Discover Ramne
Accommodation in Ramne
Ramne brings together suggested routes in Galičica National Park with archaeological and church-related themes. The routes differ in their sequence, while the village’s history ranges from an early Christian basilica to traces of Roman settlement and burial. You can plan your trip according to whether you are especially interested in the routes or the historical evidence.
Suggested routes in Galičica National Park
One suggested route runs through Velgoshti and Letnica, passing through Ramne and continuing to the Ohrid Visitor Centre. Another starts in Ramne and leads via Letnica, Visok Vrv and Krstec to Velestovo. Both routes include Ramne, but the village plays a different role in each: on the first, it falls within the stated sequence of stops; on the second, it is the starting point.
When comparing the two routes, you can use the named stops and their order as a guide. If you are planning a hike, check the current trail conditions beforehand.
Archaeological sites and churches in Ramne
The Manastiri archaeological site in Ramne is an early Christian basilica dating to the Early and Middle historical periods. Ramninski Lozja is a Roman-era settlement and necropolis. The two sites therefore represent different historical themes: the basilica is the defining structure at Manastiri, while Ramninski Lozja combines traces of settlement and burial.
Churches are also part of Ramne’s history. One church in the village is called the Church of St Ilija. The Church of St Athanasius was built between 1967 and 2000 on the foundations of an older church. There is a spring inside; its water is considered to have healing properties.
Ohrid: Natural and cultural heritage
In the wider destination of Ohrid, Lake Ohrid offers a distinct focus on nature. The deep lake, of tectonic origin, has existed continuously for approximately two to three million years. Its oligotrophic waters preserve more than 200 plant and animal species found only in this lake. These include algae, flatworms, snails and crustaceans. There are also 17 endemic fish species, including two trout species, as well as a rich diversity of birdlife.
Ohrid’s cultural history is equally diverse: Ohrid is one of Europe’s oldest human settlements. It is home to the oldest Slavic monastery, dedicated to St Panteleimon. Ohrid also houses more than 800 Byzantine icons dating from the 11th century to the end of the 14th century. Nature and culture offer different focuses that you can weigh up when planning your trip.
Choose the right focus for your trip
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: should Ramne’s suggested routes and archaeological themes shape your stay, or are you particularly interested in Lake Ohrid and Ohrid’s cultural heritage? This distinction gives you a concrete basis for choosing a location without conflating the different themes of the two destinations.
