Kuratica: Mountain Trails and the Vasiličari Tradition
Accommodation in Kuratica
Kuratica lies in the Mazatar–Bayrak mountain massif at an altitude of 1,100 metres. Two trail themes and the Vasiličari tradition give the place different points of interest: a hiking route across the Plakenska Mountains and a mountain-biking trail to Brezhani sit alongside a custom passed down from generation to generation. When choosing a holiday apartment, the first consideration is whether you would like to focus your trip more on physical activity or on cultural tradition.
Mountain trails with different destinations
The hiking trail leads from Kuratica across the Plakenska Mountains to the 1,877-metre summit of Gramada and on to Leshani. The route description therefore covers not only the summit but also the continuation to Leshani. Before setting out, check the trail’s current condition and markings.
The mountain-biking trail leads from Kuratica to Brezhani. The two trail themes therefore differ mainly in activity and destination: the hiking route specifies the mountains, the summit’s elevation and the continuation to Leshani, while Brezhani is the destination for the mountain-biking trail. If you would like to plan your days around a particular activity, these details offer two different points of reference when choosing a base.
Vasiličari: a tradition passed down
In 1998, a group of young initiators began expanding the Vasiličari Carnival in Kuratica and reviving the tradition passed down by their ancestors. The traditional part, passed down from generation to generation, begins on 13 January at around 6 pm. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the current event information.
A ritual fire is part of the tradition. Afterwards, masked participants visit households, where families host them with traditional food and drinks. The fire, masks and visits to homes are distinct parts of the traditional proceedings. Along with its timing, they give the carnival a communal character.
Varejnca and traditional cuisine
On the day after the Vasiličari celebration, the collected food is prepared together with the traditional dish Varejnca for the people gathered there. Leonov Dvor is a separate option: a dining destination in Kuratica serving traditional cuisine. Check whether the service is currently available before visiting.
Ohrid as the wider travel destination
In the wider travel destination of Ohrid, Lake Ohrid adds a distinct natural highlight. The deep lake, which is of tectonic origin, has existed continuously for around two to three million years. Its oligotrophic waters preserve more than 200 plant and animal species found nowhere else, including algae, flatworms, snails and crustaceans. There are also 17 endemic fish species, including two trout species, as well as a diverse birdlife.
Ohrid’s cultural history is equally rich: the town is one of Europe’s oldest human settlements. Ohrid is home to the oldest Slavic monastery, dedicated to Saint Panteleimon, as well as more than 800 Byzantine icons dating from the 11th century to the end of the 14th century. Plaoshnik is an archaeological complex with cultural layers from prehistory, antiquity and the Middle Ages; archaeological work there uncovered the remains of the old Church of Saint Clement and his grave. The Ancient Theatre was built in the Late Hellenistic period, around the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 2nd century, for dramatic, musical and poetic performances.
These themes make the choice of destination more specific: those who prioritise mountain trails and the Vasiličari tradition can focus on Kuratica; for lake ecology, archaeology and Byzantine art, the wider destination of Ohrid takes centre stage. First decide what you would most like to focus on during your trip, then use that to guide your search for a holiday apartment.
