The Mosque: Architecture and History

The Nemėžis Mosque is a rectangular wooden building with a four-sided sheet-metal roof. A small minaret tower stands on the roof, and an annex is located on the side facing Mecca. The wooden construction, roof shape and differently positioned structural elements together define the building’s appearance. The old Tatar cemeteries lie beside the mosque and add to the historic site’s local significance.

The building’s history can also be divided into clearly distinct stages. The mosque was built in 1684 and burned down in 1909. It was rebuilt to a design by architect A. Soninas. In 1978, the building was returned to the Muslim community; it was repaired in 1993 and restored in 2009. Thus, its construction, the fire and the rebuilding are joined by later, individually dated steps. A Manor House Nearby

The 19th-century main palace of Nemėžio Manor offers a different focus. It is located one kilometre from Nemėžis. Unlike the mosque, this is an estate with several buildings and park fragments, rather than a single structure with a comparable building history.
