Culture and History

The Nemėžis Mosque is located on Totorių g. in Nemėžis.

Nemėžis has a long-standing Tatar heritage: Vytautas settled Tatars here in 1397, and around 120 of their descendants were still living in the settlement when the text was written. Anyone interested in the history of Nemėžis will find a specific cultural point of reference here.

The mosque was first built in 1684 and rebuilt after a fire in 1909 according to the design of the architect A. Sonin.

Local craftsmen participated in its construction and reconstruction; both projects were supported by Aleksandras Iliasevičius, a member of Nemėžis's Tatar community.
