A large part of Aukštaitija National Park lies within the district. Many of the fourteen regional parks and various nature reserves are also located there. Protected nature is therefore an important part of the regional setting, alongside its lakes, rivers and forests.
Regional history at the museum
The Ignalina Region Museum presents the history of the region and its residents, as well as its crafts, customs and traditions. The ethnographic exhibition features authentic household items, tools and equipment from the 19th and 20th centuries. It connects everyday history with tangible objects that offer a glimpse into ways of life in the past.
Other exhibitions explore themes closely connected to life in the region. One traces flax from sowing through to its use in bedspreads or tablecloths. Another presents traditional fishing methods and explains how the fish caught helped the region’s residents survive. The museum also regularly hosts events, exhibitions and educational activities.
Trails, forests and regional discoveries
The nature trail at Paliesius Manor is suitable for hiking, jogging and cycling, and leads through a quiet, damp forest. The “Pearl Necklace of Ignalina Region’s Sights” route runs through Aukštaitija National Park. Both offer a way to explore the landscape, but focus on different things: a specific forest trail with several activities, and a route through the national park.
In the wider district, the Beekeeping Museum is located in Stripeikiai, on the edge of Minčia Forest, in the northwestern part of Aukštaitija National Park. The museum offers interactive exhibitions and honey tastings. Stripeikiai is considered the oldest village in the park and was first mentioned in Livonian chronicles in 1357. The Beekeeping Museum is administered by the Aukštaitija National Park and Labanoras Regional Park Directorate.
In Ginučiai, the watermill is protected by the state and belongs to the Aukštaitija National Park and Labanoras Regional Park Directorate. The mill welcomes visitor groups for guided tours of its exhibition by prior reservation. If you are planning a group visit, be sure to make this request in advance.
Sports and choosing your holiday focus
Ignalina Sports and Recreation Centre has a swimming pool and a bathhouse complex with a salt steam room, aroma and sauna rooms, and Lithuanian and Turkish saunas. There are also mineral-water and freshwater whirlpools. Check the centre’s latest information before your visit.
