The “Svėdasų bendruomenė” initiative created and described five walking routes through the area around Svėdasai. One of the routes described follows the Svėdasai–Sliepšiškis–Svėdasai trail. For walks in the surrounding area, the municipality recommends a circular route that starts and ends at the centrally located Bendruomenės namai. This suggestion gives your planning a specific starting and ending point and makes it easier to find your way if you want to choose walks by more than just place names. Before setting out, check whether the route is available and what the local trail conditions are like.
When you arrive, you can leave your car in the car park in the town centre and set off from there. The town centre is therefore a specific reference point for your arrival, while the walking routes head into the surrounding area. You can plan your day around both: first arrive in town, then decide whether a route or another focus should shape the day.
Lake, river and geographical orientation
Lake Svėdasas lies north of Svėdasai, and the Svėdasa River rises from it. The similar-sounding names therefore refer to two different things: Svėdasas is the lake, and Svėdasa is the river that rises from it. Alaušas approaches the Svėdasai area from the south. On a map, the lake to the north and Alaušas from the south provide two clear geographical reference points.
Historical points of reference
The Svėdasai cemetery was established in the 17th century; its gates were built in the 19th century. An earlier historical trace is a mention of the Svėdasų dvaras estate, owned by the Radvila family, in an entry dated 15 August 1503. Read in chronological order, this mention of the estate predates the establishment of the cemetery and the construction of its gates. These specific dates therefore lead from the earlier entry to the later events in the cemetery’s history.
