An accessible Kūlgrinda and museums with unusual collections give Šilalė District Municipality its own distinctive character. A 2 km educational trail leads across the Sietuvos kūlgrinda, which is considered the only Kūlgrinda in Lithuania open to visitors. Other highlights include the Jūra River, which flows through the area, and Lake Paršežeris. If you are looking for holiday accommodation, you can first consider whether nature, cultural history or distinctive experiences should shape your stay.

Educational Trail, River and Lake

The length of the educational trail across the Sietuvos kūlgrinda offers a practical guide for planning your day: the route is 2 km long. At the same time, this path is connected with a distinctive Lithuanian cultural tradition. The Kūlgrinda is considered the only one in the country that is open to visitors. This makes it a destination in its own right for anyone interested in unusual paths and regional features.

Water is also part of the municipality’s landscape, though in different forms: the Jūra River flows through the area, while Lake Paršežeris is a lake of national significance covering 193.4 hectares. The Aukštagirė ski slope is located next to the Aukštagirė observation tower.

Museums with Distinctive Histories

At the Upynos Ethnographic Museum, the collection is displayed in a former parish barn. Numerous metal crosses, cross-topped poles and small chapels are mounted on the barn’s exterior walls. The museum preserves about 3,500 ethnographic exhibits from Upyna and the surrounding areas. Visits and guided tours must be arranged in advance—keep this in mind if the museum is one of the fixed plans for your trip.

The Dionizo Poškos Baublių Museum tells a different story: founded in 1812, it is considered Lithuania’s oldest museum. It is housed inside the trunks of thousand-year-old oak trees. Its founding year and unusual architectural form give a visit both a historical and distinctive dimension. In 2024, a shelter was built at the Stasio Girėno Birthplace Museum for Vlado Kensgaila’s 1:2-scale model of the “Lituanica.” The specific date and scale make this a point of particular interest for those interested in aviation history.

More Discoveries and Travel Highlights

The Gėliūkis farm has a seven-wind flower labyrinth, where self-discovery activities are held. Paulikų levandų idilė offers lavender tea to sample. Both provide a different focus from the educational trail and museums: here, the highlights are a landscaped labyrinth and a tasting experience. Lembas is also the birthplace of Kazimieras Jaunius, a Catholic clergyman and scholar of the Lithuanian language.

This will help you choose the focus of your trip without trying to combine every destination into a single excursion.
