Landscape

The municipality extends across the Žemaičiai Upland, the edge of the West Žemaičiai Plateau and the Karšuva Lowland. Its lowest point is 43 metres above sea level near the Jūra River.

Nature

The Jūra and its tributaries Akmena, Vėžus and Lokysta cross the municipality. The nationally significant lakes Paršežeris and Paežeriai are also located here.

Forests cover 28.4 percent of the municipality; these include spruce, pine and birch forests. Larger forests are Pagramantis, Barsukinė, Didkiemis, Teneniai, Šventi and Radvietis.

At 234 metres, Medvėgalis is the highest point both in the municipality and in the Žemaitija region. It lies 10 kilometres east of Laukuva.

The municipality’s protected landscapes include the Pagramantis and Varnių Regional Parks, as well as the Stemplių Landscape, the Upyna Geomorphological Reserve, the Jūra Botanical Reserve and the Aitra Hydrographic Reserve.

Geographical setting

The Lokysta River runs through the town of Šilalė; there is a pond in the town centre.
