Margiai: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Žeimelis, in the vicinity of Margiai, the Žiemgala Museum moved in 1993 to a restored historic small inn in the town centre. It has more than 6,000 exhibits and organises educational programmes and exhibitions.

Culture

The Museum of Semigallia in Žeimelis houses archaeological, ethnographic and historical collections relating to the history of the Semigallian region. Also in the vicinity of Margiai stands the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. It was built in 1828 and rebuilt in 1928.

The Žeimelis Evangelical Lutheran Church dates from 1793; its tower and sacristy date from 1890. It has been preserved together with a vicarage, an outbuilding and a well.

History

The remains of the Žeimelis hillfort, dating from the 1st millennium to the 13th century, are located in the vicinity of Margiai. The Žeimelis hillfort has an irregularly shaped plateau measuring 60 × 100 metres.

Near Žeimelis lies a cemetery attributed to the Semigallians, dating from the 6th to the 13th century. Its grave goods included weapons, tools and jewellery. The northern and eastern boundaries of the former Geručiai estate are marked by defensive structures.

Places

In the village of Steigviliai, in the vicinity of Margiai, there is a windmill, a lake and various old brick and wooden houses. Steigviliai is considered a former royal village; a visit to regional researcher Aleksas Pasuskevicius is possible by prior appointment.

The farmstead complex in Striukai houses a museum of rural life as well as an exhibition of Soviet technology. In Lauksodis, the Church of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga is located near the road between Linkuva and Žeimelis.

Margiai is marked on the official visitor map of Pakruojis District. The map lists the Žemaitija–Aukštaitija route among the district's tourist routes. The Semigallia Route in the vicinity of Margiai can be visited independently or with a booked guide.

As a continuation of the Žiemgala Route, Latvia, Bauska and Rundāle Palace are named from the vicinity of Margiai; according to the same route information, Žeimelis is 17 kilometres from Rundāle.
