Traces of history in Akmenė and Papilė

The Akmenės istorijos siena was inspired by the Akmenė community and created by artist Antanas Adomaitis. Local archaeological finds, mainly pieces of jewellery and coins, are displayed in openings in the wall. Here, the community idea behind the history wall meets tangible finds from the region. Visitors interested in archaeology can discover the past here in a different way than at an exhibition devoted exclusively to historical narratives.

In Papilė, the 4-kilometre Jurakalnio pažintinis takas geological educational trail is a circular route that passes several attractions visitors can reach along the way. These include the S. Daukanto muziejus, the Papilės Šv. Juozapo bažnyčia, the monument and grave of S. Daukantas, the Papilės I and II piliakalniai, and the natural monument penkiolikakamienė liepa. The route combines geological orientation with cultural and historical sites. Its length and circular layout provide a concrete reference for planning your day; they do not indicate a walking time or difficulty level.

Geology and history as educational activities

The educational programme “Dinozaurų beieškant” takes place at the Ventos regioninio parko lankytojų centras in Venta. It is aimed at school students and has a theoretical and a practical part. First, the students and their teacher learn about the nature, geology and history of the Venta region and visit the visitor centre exhibition. They then search for fossils, excavate them and identify them at the Papartynė geological outcrop, 15 kilometres from Venta.

Another educational session at the visitor centre is called “Ventos krašto istorija ir archeologija” and is also aimed at school students. It covers the early history of the Venta region and includes a visit to the exhibition. The practical part includes throwing Žiemgalių spears and lighting a fire with an old flint striker. The two activities cater to different interests: one focuses on geology and fossils, the other on early history and archaeological themes.

Culture in Papilė and the wider destination

The S. Daukanto memorialinis muziejus in Papilė hosts poetry festivals, meetings with distinguished guests, discussions about culture, music concerts and book presentations. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for the time of your visit.

The wider destination of Šiauliai District brings in further cultural and historical themes. The Hill of Crosses is an important religious site that bears witness to veneration and devotion to the sacrifice of the cross. Pope John Paul II visited it on 7 September 1993; the hill lies about 12 kilometres north of Šiauliai, near the Šiauliai–Riga railway line.

Museums in Šiauliai District also offer a range of different perspectives: the Photography Museum is Lithuania’s only specialised museum of the history of photography, photographic art and photographic technology. The Chaim Frenkel Villa Museum is one of Lithuania’s few Art Nouveau buildings from the early 20th century. Its “Fabrikantai Frenkeliai” exhibition presents two generations of the Frenkel family and the history of the Jews in Šiauliai. The Bicycle Museum is Lithuania’s only specialised museum devoted to the history of the bicycle; visitors can also try out cycling-related activities and test road cycling on the third floor.
