Discover Vecpiebalga: Museums, Church and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Vecpiebalga
Vecpiebalga combines local history, unusual museums and a cycling route shaped by literature. Between water-lily ponds, historic sites of remembrance and paths through Piebalga, it offers a destination for anyone who wants to get to know Latvia beyond the surface. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you want to devote your stay primarily to the museums and the town centre or also allow time for a longer cycling tour.
Culture and History in Special Places
An impressive historical landmark is Grišku kalns. In the 13th century, the hill was an important settlement site. Its slopes were artificially steepened, and there was also a deep defensive ditch. Grišku kalns is about 10 metres high and is also known as “Piebalgas pilskalns”, “Balgas pilskalns” and “Veļķu pilskalns”. When the trees are bare, it offers views of the Vecpiebalga Lutheran Church and the site of the Vecpiebalga castle ruins.
The museums also tell the story of the area’s cultural character. The “Kaikaši” Memorial Museum is located in Lejas Kaikaši, the birthplace of writer Antons Austriņš (1884–1934), in Vecpiebalgas pagasts. “Kalna Kaibēni” is considered Latvia’s oldest memorial museum and opened in 1929. Since 2020, a viewing platform has once again been available in the museum garden. The “Saulrieti” Memorial Museum dedicated to Kārlis Skalbe has existed since 1987.
Film Technology, Church and Town Centre
An unusual stop is the “Kino ferma” museum, Latvia’s only exhibition of cinema technology with a cinema hall. During guided group tours, historic film projectors are demonstrated in operation with film reels. Individual travellers can visit the permanent exhibition accompanied by the collector and with explanations. Vecpiebalga therefore offers access to the history of cinema in addition to literary memorial sites.
The Vecpiebalga Lutheran Church was restored after Latvia regained its state independence, based on a design by architect Austra Skujiņa. Services are held there on Sundays. In the centre, on the Cēsis–Madona highway, there are water-lily ponds that delight locals and visitors. Vecpiebalga’s “Viesistaba” is laid out as a landscaped area with decorative plantings, small bridges and picturesque paths. In summer, the illuminated fountain becomes a popular attraction for evening strolls.
Exploring the Cycling Route Through Literature
Those who enjoy combining culture with activity will find a clearly designated option in the “Mērnieku laiki” cycling route. The route is numbered 158 and is 100 kilometres long. In Piebalga, it follows in the footsteps of the first Latvian novel, “Mērnieku laiki”. The route runs along country roads, “Green Railways” and forest paths. Take its length into account when planning your day and choose your accommodation according to the desired pace of your trip.
For a stay involving several cultural highlights, the memorial museums, church, town centre and the distinctive features of Grišku kalns can be combined. The cycling route, by contrast, offers a separate focus and is suitable for a more extensive exploration of the landscape. A holiday apartment in Vecpiebalga is therefore a particularly suitable option if you want to organise your stay flexibly between sightseeing, museum visits and a longer bike tour.
