The history of the town itself can also be traced at several sites. Valdemārpils was named in honour of Krišjānis Valdemārs, who studied and worked as a teacher there from 1835 to 1845. The monument to Krišjānis Valdemārs was unveiled on 18 November 1993 and created by sculptor Dzintra Jansone. The former synagogue at 1 Ezera iela was built around 1830. In the 19th century, the Sasmaka synagogue complex comprised a synagogue, a ritual slaughterhouse, a ritual bath and the rabbi’s residence. On Dzirnavkalns, a Jewish cemetery with gravestones commemorates Valdemārpils’s former Jewish community; burials took place there until 1940.

Landscape features around the town

On the grounds at the end of Liepu iela, Sasmakas Elku lime tree stands in the park in front of the former Sasmaka manor house. Its trunk circumference is 8 metres, and its age is estimated at 350 to 400 years. Dzirnavkalns takes its name from a mill that stood there until 1960. The upper floors of the mill once offered a view towards Sasmaka Lake. Valdemārpils is also located by Dupurkalns hillfort, which is 47 metres high.
