Mērsrags – Coast, Nature and Culture

Mērsrags combines coastal landscapes, maritime history and distinctive cultural monuments. The town is located in the Engures ezera dabas parks Nature Park; at the same time, the Engures–Mērsrags Canal, dug in 1842, runs through Mērsrags. This creates a varied mix for planning your trip, with days at the beach, walks, nature observation and historical discoveries.

Beach, pine forest and birdwatching

The several-kilometre-long Mērsraga pludmale is suitable for swimming and sunbathing. Walks are also possible along Mērsraga pludmale and through the pine forest. A wooden footbridge, built in 2018, leads from the car park to Mērsraga pludmale and is therefore one of the specific landmarks for a visit to the beach.

Those who want to experience the landscape beyond the shore can visit the birdwatching tower in Mērsrags. From there, there is a sweeping view of coastal meadows and grassland grazed by cattle. Mērsrags is also considered an excellent place for observing waterbirds; migratory birds, songbirds and birds of prey gather there. At Mērsraga zemes rags, Velna akmens lies about 50 metres from the shore. Destinations like these give a stay different rhythms: a day of swimming can be followed by a peaceful nature walk or observation in the landscape.

Harbour and lighthouse as maritime landmarks

The harbour of Mērsrags provides a sheltered harbour area in an artificially constructed entrance between two breakwaters. In the harbour, Yacht Club Kurland has a permanent berth, modern lighting, electricity and water connections, as well as a service building with a wastewater pumping system. The harbour and the canal running through the town make Mērsrags's maritime character particularly vivid.

The Mērsrags Lighthouse is also part of the townscape. Its tower is a nationally significant architectural monument. Together with the harbour, canal and beach, it creates a coastal setting that points not only to recreation by the water, but also to the history and use of the town.

Wooden church and museum

The Mērsraga Evanģēliski luteriskā baznīca is an important cultural attraction. The present wooden building was erected in 1809 and completely rebuilt in 1896. The church is considered one of the oldest wooden churches in Latvia. Its interior contains several state-protected cultural monuments, including J. F. Sartoris's altar painting “Christ with the Child”, J. Pipars's 1793 painting “Jesus Saves the Drowning Peter”, an organ from the second half of the 19th century and a chandelier from the end of the 19th century.

The Muzejs „Saieta nams“ is located in a building erected in 1811, which is described as the oldest residential building in Mērsrags and has been preserved to this day. Part of the exhibition is devoted to old Latvian writing, ownership and magical symbols. An extensive collection of such symbols can be seen on work tools and household objects. The museum can be visited by prior registration.
