Sigulda: Gauja Valley, Culture and Active Experiences

Sigulda combines the impressive landscape of the Gauja Valley with castles, historic sites and unusual activities. Anyone wishing to combine nature experiences and culture on a trip will find a variety of ways to enjoy both relaxing and active days here. When looking for a holiday apartment in Sigulda, you can therefore consider which experiences should be the focus of your stay.

Gauja Valley, Cliffs and Paths through the Landscape

One characteristic location is Paradīzes kalns, from where the landscape of the Gauja Valley can be seen together with the Gauja River, 80 metres below. This viewpoint can be reached from the centre of Sigulda in about 30 minutes on foot; the route follows level nature trails. This provides clear guidance for anyone wishing to include a walk in their daily plans. The alternative name Gleznotājkalns recalls that J. Feders, J. Rozentāls and V. Purvītis painted the landscape at this location.

Gūtmaņala also illustrates the natural surroundings of Sigulda. The cave is 18.8 metres long, 12 metres wide and up to 10 metres high. Its walls preserve the oldest inscriptions dating from the 17th century. The area around Gūtmaņala is suitable for relaxed walks and for observing plants and possibly also animals in Gauja National Park. Another walking path connects the Gauja Valley with Šveices iela near Sigulda Art School “Baltais flīģelis”.

Discover Castles and Cultural History

The 42-hectare Turaida Museum Reserve brings together archaeological, architectural, historical and art-historical monuments. They tell of events spanning more than a thousand years, beginning in the 11th century. The stone castle of Turaida is also part of the site’s history: construction began in 1214 on the site of an earlier wooden castle belonging to the Livonian leader Kaupo, which had been burned down in battles.

In Sigulda itself, construction of the castle of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword began in 1207. Siguldas Jaunā pils provides a different historical highlight; it was built between 1878 and 1881 as the summer residence of the Kropotkin family. The building is a nationally significant architectural monument. Its national romantic interior has been preserved to this day and was restored from 2017 to 2021. There, you can view the interior and modern exhibitions, as well as attend a variety of cultural events.

Active Excursions for Different Days of Travel

The Sigulda cable car crosses the Gauja Valley and offers views several kilometres across the landscape. For a more active day, Tarzāns Adventure Park offers a high-rope obstacle course with 11 courses and more than 140 obstacles arranged in trees at heights of up to 20 metres. The “Sigulda” bobsleigh and luge track also offers various seasonal opportunities: during the warmer months, you can ride the summer bobsleigh, while in winter there are rides on Vučko, skeleton bobsleigh or ice rafting.

Anyone wishing to explore Sigulda by bicycle can consider the Sigulda–Murjāņi–Sigulda route. It is 30.2 kilometres long and provides a clear framework for planning the day. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore weigh up different priorities: walks and landscapes, historical sightseeing, a ride across the valley or an active excursion along a longer route.

Sigulda as a Starting Point for Your Trip

A holiday apartment in Sigulda is particularly suitable for a trip where you do not want to limit nature, culture and activities to a single theme. Paradīzes kalns provides a reference point for a walk from the centre, while Gūtmaņala and the Turaida Museum Reserve offer distinct focuses between landscape and history. For families, it may be interesting to combine quiet paths, viewpoints and cultural discoveries with seasonal rides or an adventure park. The location of your accommodation will therefore depend above all on your preferred daily rhythm and the experiences you plan to enjoy in Sigulda.
