Limbaži – Culture, Craftsmanship and Nature at Lielezers
Limbaži combines historical discoveries with a nature experience at Limbažu Lielezers. If you would like to combine culture, craftsmanship and time outdoors during your holiday, you will find various opportunities here to get to know the town in greater detail. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can choose your focus depending on whether exhibitions and historical topics or a route along the lake are to determine the rhythm of your day.
Historical insights into Limbaži
At the “Limbažu viduslaiku pilsdrupas”, you can explore a site considered one of the oldest fortifications in Latvia. The “PERPETUUM MOBILES” exhibition offers another way to engage with history. It covers the development of Limbaži as a district centre in the 13th–15th centuries and is set up in three halls on the first floor of the main building of Pilsmuiža in Limbaži. Those interested can actively engage with the exploration of the past there.
The “Vecais ugunsdzēsēju depo” focuses on the history of Limbaži’s volunteer firefighters’ association. A special perspective opens up when climbing to the top of the depot tower: visitors can ascend via narrow staircases and glass floors and look through the windows on the fifth floor over the central part of Limbaži’s old town. Thus, in addition to its exhibition, the depot offers a tangible historical view of the town.
Craftsmanship, silver and local products
For travellers who enjoy discovering history through materials and techniques, Limbaži offers several different themes. The “Sudraba Limbaži” exhibition provides a guided tour about the connection between Limbaži and silver. This includes demonstrations of soldering. In the workshop, visitors can also learn skills in working with brass and silver; master classes are offered as well.
“Filcītis” presents a historical account of the former “Limbažu Filcs” factory. An exhibition on the history of “Limbažu Filcs” includes a felt workshop where visitors can try making felt souvenirs. At “Limbažu tīne”, visitors can in turn observe the processing of wool on historical equipment. In the centre of Limbaži, the “Radīts Limbažu novadā” shop brings together work by more than 100 producers, home producers, craftspeople and creatives from Limbažu novads.
A nature trail at Limbažu Lielezers
If you would like to plan a route by the water alongside the cultural attractions, Limbažu Lielezers offers a clearly described nature excursion. The nature trail is 2.3 km long and designed as a one-way route. It connects the town beach and the boat base with a birdwatching tower. Sections with wooden boardwalks lead through reed beds; from the birdwatching tower, you can enjoy views of the lake.
Vienības Park is located between Rīgas iela and Parka iela in Limbaži and adds another named outdoor area to the town’s points of orientation. This allows you to arrange your stay according to your interests, combining historic interiors, insights into craftsmanship and a route through nature.
