Palace, park and historic impressions

The Stāmerienas Palace was built in Stāmerienas pagasts in the mid-19th century. After being damaged by fire during the 1905 Revolution, it was restored; the restoration was completed in 1908. The palace is surrounded by a 24.3-hectare English-style landscape park. This gives your day plan a combination of architectural history and extensive parkland, without requiring you to focus on just one type of sightseeing.

The palace reopened to visitors on 30 November 2019. The Stāmerienas Ņevas-Aleksandra Orthodox Church, consecrated on 6 June 1904, is also part of the area’s historic character. Those interested in architecture and regional history can mark these places as cultural highlights of their trip.

Lake landscapes and routes for different day plans

There are four lakes in Stāmerienas pagasts: Ludza, Stāmerienas, Pogas and Kalnienas (Ģērmaņu). Lake Stāmerienas covers 92 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 18.7 metres. In summer, three SUP boards and a rowing boat can be rented in Stāmeriena. This information helps you choose between an excursion focused on the landscape and a more active day on the water.

For a drive through the surrounding area, the 23-kilometre circular route 164 “Ap Stāmerienu un Kalnamuižu” is available. In addition, the Bānīša Zeme visitor programme includes six cycle routes along the narrow-gauge railway. In several places, these paths cross the tracks and stop at narrow-gauge train halts. Depending on your preferred pace of travel, you can therefore include a circular drive, a cycling tour or a combination with a train journey in your plans.

Travelling by narrow-gauge railway

The Gulbenes–Alūksnes bānītis operates daily on the 33-kilometre route between Gulbene and Alūksne, with two journeys in each direction. It stops at Stāmeriena station, whose historic station building is a destination in its own right for railway enthusiasts. In Stāmerienas pagasts, the Gulbenes–Alūksnes bānītis is the only regularly operating narrow-gauge train in the Baltics. You can therefore choose accommodation in Namsadi according to your preferred balance between peaceful days amid the landscapes, train journeys and other excursions.

Plan additional experiences

At Dzelzavieši, a tour of a diverse farm is offered. There, you can see farm animals and an exhibition of antiques. Horse-riding excursions and horseback hikes are also offered there.
