Gulbene – Culture, Railway Heritage and Park Trails

Gulbene combines historic buildings, railway culture and green trails to create a diverse travel destination. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Gulbene can plan their stay around their preferred focus: culture and regional history are just as much an option as walks through park landscapes or practical insights into traditional handicraft and confectionery work.

Church, Manor House and Regional History

A prominent landmark is Gulbene Lutheran Church. It was built between 1838 and 1843 on the ruins of the castle and stands on a hill in a bend of the Krustalīce River. This bend is considered the original centre of the city of Gulbene. Next to the church, a monument to Martin Luther was unveiled in 1883 to mark the 400th anniversary of his birth.

The cultural history also includes the “Tautsaimniecība” exhibition in the granary of Vecgulbene Manor House. More than 1,300 collection objects connected with the history of Gulbene are displayed there. The visit goes beyond simply looking: you can mill flour with hand mills and spin linen yarn. This allows a cultural excursion to be enhanced with hands-on activities.

“Gardums” also combines insight with personal experience. A confectionery tour with tasting includes a prepared selection of confectionery products and coffee. In addition, “Gardums” offers practical confectionery workshops in which participants prepare sweets together.

Experience the Railway and Plan Your Visit Well

At the Gulbene depot, you can visit the repair workshops, the Gr-319 “Ferdinands” steam locomotive and other narrow-gauge rolling stock. The educational and interactive centre “Dzelzceļš un Tvaiks” at Gulbene railway station offers another way to explore railway history. The station is a historic building connected with Latvia’s cultural, historical and industrial heritage.

At the centre, visitors can explore the development of the railway sector and future trends using 30 interactive devices. Anyone who enjoys trying things out and wants to learn about technical connections not only through display cases will find a particular focus here. Prior registration is required for visits to “Dzelzceļš un Tvaiks”. This should therefore be included in your daily planning before coordinating your accommodation and other activities.

Park Landscapes and Trails for Different Days

Spārītes Park has the status of a nature monument of local significance. Two differently designed trails run through the Spārīte and Emze park area: the Heinrich Trail is a 3.2 km linear walking trail with a walking time of about one hour. The Marisa Trail is 2.2 km long, designed as a circular route and indicated as taking about 40 minutes. The different route formats make it easier to choose between a linear walk and a shorter loop, without requiring you to follow the same daily programme for both.

Another park landscape belongs to Vecgulbene Manor House. The landscape park includes the Mīlas kalniņš and Kafijas kalniņš hills as well as small ponds. There is also the 30-minute audio guide “Parka stāsti”, designed as a dialogue between the former owners of a manor house. This allows nature, historic sites and narrated history to provide different highlights within the same trip.

For a trip focused on regional culinary delights, the tasting tour and workshops at “Gardums” offer an additional element.
