Holiday apartment in Veronella: history, routes and regional traditions

Veronella combines a history dating back to the prehistoric Copper Age with medieval architectural heritage, churches, routes and regional traditions. In July 2026, a multi-day festival programme will be added.

Castle history, churches and traces of early settlement

The Villa Serego detta Corte Grande largely consists of the remains of a medieval castle. An attached 18th-century building divides the agricultural complex into two courtyards. The village developed around a castle at a site later known as Cucchetta or Corte Grande.

The earliest traces in Veronella confirmed by archaeological finds date back to the prehistoric Copper Age. A Proto-Venetic community left an early settlement on the hills of Sabbionara; its necropolis was located near Lake Caneviera by Desmontà. The Roman Via Imperialis corresponded to today's Via Porcilana.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista had its first rector in 1388. The Chiesa di San Gregorio Magno was renovated between 1814 and 1818 based on a design by Francesco Fostini. The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate in Miega has been remodelled several times from the 16th century to the present day.

Routes to cultural sites, buildings and local products

The Percorso del Colognese runs along minor roads, is almost entirely paved and has only short unpaved sections. For planning a cycling tour, this change in surface is clearly defined: the route choice can be based on the paved and unpaved sections, with the short unpaved passages forming a clearly limited part of the route. From this route, the Botti della Zerpana, a monumental hydraulic structure, can be admired near Desmontà. As a cycle path, the Percorso del Colognese also leads to Corte Grande – Villa Serego alla Cucca. The complex includes barchesse attributed to Andrea Palladio. The cycle path also passes the Tezon, one of the last surviving 16th-century tezoni in the Veneto.

The Via della Moreta di Veronella draws on local agricultural traditions and can also be explored on foot. Verza Moretta is a vegetable product with an intensely purple exterior and a white-yellow interior. The route can therefore be planned for individual days of travel in Veronella both around its agricultural theme and around the possibility of walking.

Festival programme in July 2026

The historic Sagra della Madonna del Carmine and the 3rd Festa Regionale delle Carni Rosse in Veronella offer food stalls and live music every evening between 9 July and 21 July 2026. The programme also includes a classic car and tuning meet, tractors and agricultural competitions, “Veronèla in Gradèla”, a Luna Park with a children's area, a charity tombola, as well as exhibitions, tradition and culture. For a multi-day trip, this period can be included in the itinerary as a separate focal period.
