Holiday apartment in Chioggia: lagoon culture, museums and fishing tradition

Chioggia lies at the southern end of the lagoon and combines a multifaceted urban history with maritime nature, fishing and regional cuisine. Between museums, historic buildings, underwater worlds and traditional dishes, the town reveals itself from several perspectives.

Culture

The Museo Civico della Laguna Sud San Francesco Fuori le Mura houses an extensive collection of archaeological and ethnographic finds connected with lagoon culture. On three floors, the Museo Civico della Laguna Sud presents the history of Chioggia from pre-Roman times to the present day. This places both the material evidence of the lagoon and the chronological development of the town at the centre.

The Museo di Zoologia Adriatica is housed in the Palazzo Grassi, a historic building dating from the 18th century. It preserves numerous species of marine organisms; guided tours for schools or groups are also possible. In the Museo dell'Orologio, a medieval clock, together with information about astronomy and an astrolabe, presents another cultural and historical focus. The museum is housed in the millennia-old bell tower of Sant’Andrea.

The historic townscape also includes the Porta di Santa Maria, dating from 1530. It was formerly the only access to Chioggia from the mainland. The fish market of Chioggia is considered one of the oldest institutions in the town.

Nature and water

Off the coast lie the Tegnùe, natural reefs that provide a habitat for diverse marine fauna, including numerous species of fish, invertebrates, echinoderms, molluscs and crustaceans. Particularly interesting diving sites have been established at the Tegnùe, with safe moorings and easily accessible underwater routes for recreational diving.

The interaction with the water can also be directly connected with local knowledge: in Chioggia, visitors can learn how to handle ropes and buoys together with local sailors. At the Ittiturismo and Pescaturismo in Chioggia, visitors can also take part in the work of the fishermen.

For exploring the lagoon area, Chioggia has a circular route of approximately 7 km with several information points about the flora and fauna of this lagoon area. The approximate length and the thematic stations are just as much a part of the route as its connection with the plant and animal life.

Cuisine

Fruit and vegetables are grown in Chioggia. The type of soil and the influence of the sea give the crops an intense, full and distinctive flavour. The connection with fishing is also evident at the Sagra del Pesce, which has been held for more than 80 years.

At the Sagra del Pesce, visitors can sample traditional dishes such as Sarde in Saore, Peoci in Cassopipa and mixed fish with Schie, as well as various fish dishes. Together with Ittiturismo and Pescaturismo, the work of the fishermen is therefore also one of Chioggia's explicitly mentioned culinary and maritime connections.
