Asolo combines impressive traces of the past with forest, art and regional wine. Historic buildings, archaeological traces, cultural events, walks and tastings shape the different facets of the town. Those interested in culture can move between architecture, archaeology, art and historic figures.
History in towers, museums and excavations
One striking historic landmark is the Torre Civica, also known as the Torre dell’Orologio. It is one of the four towers of Asolo Castle and has been mentioned since as early as the 10th century. The archaeological section of the Museo Civico di Asolo displays finds from Asolo and the surrounding area. The objects date from prehistoric times through the medieval-Renaissance period. The tower and museum thus offer two different ways of accessing Asolo’s history: through its fortifications and through archaeological finds.
Around the Casa Gotica, Asolo’s continuous settlement extends from the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age, approximately the 10th to 9th century BC, through the Middle Ages and into the modern era. The Museo Civico di Asolo also dedicates separate sections or rooms to Freya Stark, Caterina Cornaro and Eleonora Duse. The monastery and its associated church, S. Anna, were built on Colle Messano in the years immediately after 1586. The remains of a Roman theatre dating from around the 2nd century AD are located in the park of Villa Freya.
Plan art and events deliberately
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta houses altarpieces by Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo da Ponte. These works create a distinct art-historical focus within the cathedral. The Teatro Duse provides a different cultural accent: theatre series, concerts and other cultural events take place there; access is only possible as part of the events held there. For this venue, planning therefore depends on the specific event.
To the Rocca via the Sentiero della Rocca
The Rocca is a military fortification on Monte Ricco at an elevation of 310 metres. It was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The Sentiero della Rocca, trail number 39, leads to the Rocca via a staircase with 280 steps. The elevation of 310 metres and the staircase with 280 steps provide a clear framework for the climb; the route can therefore be planned as a separate section.
Forest, aqueduct and regional wines
BoscAsolo is a freely accessible area where you can experience and explore the forest independently. As an additional activity, a guided speleological tour of the Roman La Bot aqueduct in Asolo is possible; a reservation is required. The reservation should therefore be scheduled as a separate appointment before the visit.
For enjoyable hours, the wine bars of Asolo offer local wines for tasting, including Prosecco, Merlot, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot and Incrocio Manzoni.
