Holiday apartment in Pieve D'alpago: Culture, Mountains and Alta Via No. 7

Pieve d’Alpago is a destination for holidays that combine traces of history, mountain landscapes and a clear focus on hiking. In the town and its immediate surroundings are the parish church of Madonna del Rosario, Villa Falìn and the Sagra di Sant’Anna; the Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 7 also begins at Rifugio Dolomieu al Dolàda.

Historical traces from antiquity to the Middle Ages

On 30 October 1340, Pieve d’Alpago was the setting for the investiture of Giacoma da Vivaro. A bronze situla from Pian de la Gnela takes us back much further. It was recovered in 2002 and is dated to the period between the late 6th and early 5th centuries BC. The event of 1340 and the situla from Pian de la Gnela come from distinctly different periods.

Terrace, mountains and the Alta Via delle Dolomiti

The necropolis of Pian de la Gnela lies on a terrace at an altitude of 900 to 925 metres, descending from Monte Dolada southeastwards towards the Torrente Tesa. Monte Dolada is located in the immediate surroundings of Pieve d’Alpago. The mountains Coll Mai, Monte Teverone and Col Falalto are also nearby.

For active days, the Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 7 provides a clear framework: it can be hiked in five days and begins at Rifugio Dolomieu al Dolàda in Pieve d’Alpago. Its five-day duration makes it a journey section in its own right. The five days form a continuous block of time within the holiday. For holiday planning, the Alta Via should therefore be regarded as a multi-day focus rather than a single day of hiking.

Churches, Villa Falìn and living tradition

The parish church of Madonna del Rosario in Pieve d’Alpago was built from 1185 onwards. The rebuilt Madonna del Rosario church was completed by 1879. Above the church’s right-hand side door is a painting by Gaspare Diziani.

Villa Falìn in Pieve provides another distinctive landmark: it was built in the 17th century and remodelled in later centuries. Villa Falìn in Pieve is the only Venetian villa in Alpago. The later alterations are also part of the villa’s architectural history.

The Sagra di Sant’Anna takes place every year in the centre of Pieve d’Alpago. As a result, the town centre has a recurring cultural event in addition to its buildings.
