San Venanzo combines a volcanic landscape with a local history dating back to the early periods of human history. The Volcanological Park, several trails, historic buildings and the natural surroundings of Monte Peglia offer different focal points for days of exploration.

In the Volcanological Park, volcanic cones, craters and lava flows meet rare rocks and minerals, including venanzite.

An educational trail added in 2004 leads through the former venanzite quarry.

The Volcanological Museum is housed in an old building in the historic centre of San Venanzo and is located near the Villa Comunale. Notable exhibits include a dinosaur egg and the skull of Elephas meridionalis. The museum also preserves finds documenting human presence in San Venanzo since the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods, as well as the Bronze and Iron Ages.

Trails offering different landscape impressions

The San Venanzo–Parco vulcanologico circular trail is a short walk through the area of the palaeovolcanoes immediately around San Venanzo. The San Venanzo–Cornia circular trail begins on Via Gorizia in San Venanzo, crosses the Fosso della Fuga and passes through wooded and agricultural land.

The San Venanzo–Civitella–Marsciano trail reaches Civitella Castle. The alley beside the church offers panoramic views and conveys the distinctive character of the village. In the Elmo–Melonta natural area, the trail of the same name runs to a ridge overlooking the surrounding forests.

The historic section from Madonna dei Monti to Marsciano is no longer walkable. An alternative route that deviates only slightly from the mapped course is suggested.

Historical traces in the town centre

The medieval castle of San Venanzo was destroyed in 1437 after repeatedly failing to meet its tax obligations as a fief of the Monaldeschi family. The large tower overlooking San Venanzo is a remnant of this medieval castle.

The Church of Madonna Liberatrice contains a 14th-century fresco. The historic Villa Faina is one of San Venanzo’s attractions.

Monte Peglia natural area

Parco dei Sette Frati is located near the summit of Monte Peglia and includes a protected wildlife area as well as the Monte Peglia Flora and Fauna Documentation Centre.

Together with Ficulle and Parrano, San Venanzo belongs to the Monte Peglia MAB-UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The municipal area also contains the state-owned “Fulignano” building near the hamlet of San Marino. It has been completely renovated and reorganised to accommodate visitors to the protected natural area and the circular trail, which partly borders the integral protection area.

Other destinations in the same broader area include Porano, Cesi, Ferentillo, Casteldelmonte, Toscolano, Stroncone, Cecalocco and Civitella Del Lago.
