Holiday apartment in Casteldelmonte – castle, churches and circular trails

Casteldelmonte is one of the historic centers of the Terre Arnolfe and is considered one of the most panoramic hamlets in the Acquasparta area. The village combines medieval fortifications, sacred art and paths through the countryside. When planning a stay in a holiday apartment in Casteldelmonte, the village can be explored through these three aspects.

Castle walls and medieval history

In the Middle Ages, Casteldelmonte was a castle contested by Todi and Spoleto. The medieval castle was remodeled in the 15th century. In the past, Porta Tramontana was the only entrance to the walls of Casteldelmonte. Within these walls stands the Chiesa di San Biagio, built against the ancient keep.

Churches, frescoes and early historical evidence

The Chiesa della Madonna del Fiore was built around 1670 and contains two frescoes dated 1673. A fragment of an early Christian marble sarcophagus dating from the second half of the 4th century was found near the Chiesa di San Giovenale; it is now preserved in the Museo Civico di Spoleto. Inside the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista are three altars: the main altar is dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, while the other two are dedicated to the Madonna and San Giuseppe.

Walks overlooking Acquasparta

The castellieri in the Monti Martani are the remains of small fortified settlements left by the Umbrian people from the Middle Bronze Age onward and used until the 3rd century BC. The Castelliere di Monterotondo is 700 m from Casteldelmonte’s main square, reached by a walk. A circular trail begins in the main square at the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista. The route climbs noticeably, is stony and offers magnificent views; to the right, the view opens out over the Acquasparta valley and Acquasparta.

Casteldelmonte on gravel and mountain bike tours

Two different cycling routes are also highlights for active days. The Terre Arnolfe Gravel Route reaches the village of Casteldelmonte and then continues towards Firenzuola. The Terre Arnolfe MTB Tour reaches Casteldelmonte via a beautiful, gently hilly gravel road. The two tours thus show different sides of the surrounding area: one incorporates the village into a longer route, while the other approaches it along a gently rolling gravel profile.
