Holiday apartment in Casigliano: Castle, Lake and History

Anyone planning a stay in a holiday apartment in Casigliano can shape their trip around medieval architectural history, sacred sites of remembrance and a distinctive lake. Specific points of interest include Castello di Casigliano, traces of the degli Atti family, Lago di Casigliano and the hike “Casigliano e l'antica strada delle Sette Valli”.

Castello, San Biagio and the history of the Atti family

Castello di Casigliano was rebuilt in 1519 on behalf of Ludovico degli Atti, based on a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, around an already existing medieval Rocca.

At the centre of Casigliano stands the Chiesa di San Biagio. Its crypt preserves the tombs of members of the degli Atti family, who were killed by the Cesi di Acquasparta in 1553. The Tomba degli Atti contains the remains of Ludovico degli Atti, Virginia dei duchi Aquitani, Cecilia Sforza and Cecilia Sforza’s sisters.

The sarcophagi of the degli Atti family in Casigliano are made of white marble and bear a Christian monogram as well as the coat of arms of the degli Atti family. Their heraldry depicts a rampant lion, three bands and a star. According to a traditional account, Casigliano was founded by members of the Gens Casilena, who built a Roman villa enclosed by walls there.

Lago di Casigliano between landscape and legend

Lago di Casigliano lies near the Castello di Casigliano of the same name, close to Acquasparta. A local legend attributes its formation to the earth sinking after Santa Degna turned away. At the same time, the lake is one of the notable Piping-Sinkhole phenomena. Thus, local tradition and a special geological classification meet at this site.

Visits and trails with historical connections

The interior of Castello di Casigliano can only be visited by prior reservation with the owner. This requirement is part of carefully planning the cultural programme.

The hike “Casigliano e l'antica strada delle Sette Valli” is dedicated to exploring the territories of the Cesi and the Atti. For the guided hike announced in 2021, the meeting point was in Casigliano di Acquasparta. The Festa di Casigliano is a local festival associated with the historic centre of the Casigliano district.
