Terni combines impressive waterscapes with Roman history, art and regional experiences. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can choose the focus of their trip themselves: museums and historic monuments, paths through nature and history, or the Cascata delle Marmore and activities on the water. Culinary discoveries are also part of the city’s character.

Art and history in Terni

The CAOS cultural complex – Centro Arti Opificio Siri – shows how a former industrial site can be put to new use. The complex was created by reclaiming and redesigning the former SIRI chemical factory. At the Museo d’arte moderna e contemporanea “Aurelio De Felice”, the collection ranges from late medieval art and the artistic experiments of the 20th century to contemporary aesthetic positions.

Terni Art Mapping offers a special way to discover art in Terni. The project connects works from the Museo “Aurelio De Felice” with artworks in the urban space. Thematic routes allow visitors to put together their own personal discovery route. This makes it possible to combine the museum’s artworks with an independent exploration of the city, without limiting the trip to a single attraction.

The Roman past is also present in several places. The Roman amphitheatre is the most significant surviving monument from the Roman era of the city of Terni, known as Interamna. Following restoration and redesign, it became a venue for theatrical performances and cultural events. Carsulae probably originated towards the end of the 3rd century BC. The Museo Archeologico Claudia Giontella is divided into a pre-Roman and a Roman section and tells the history of Interamna Nahars, the Roman predecessor of present-day Terni.

Water, paths and nature experiences

The Cascata delle Marmore is a prominent attraction in the surrounding area. There, the River Velino falls over a 165-metre-high drop into the River Nera below. The waterfall system was created in 271 BC as a Roman hydraulic engineering project to improve the drainage of the Velino. In the park, the “Tra acqua e natura” experience offers paths through the area where visitors can explore its history, flora and fauna.

This opens up different options for planning your trip: you can combine cultural visits with time in nature or devote a day more strongly to physical activity and landscapes. The Cammino di San Valentino begins at the Basilica di San Valentino in Terni. The basilica is located about two kilometres from the centre of Terni and stands on the site of an ancient Christian cemetery, which is among the most significant evidence of early Christian necropolises in Umbria. In the area around Terni, the Parco regionale del Fiume Nera also offers rowing, rafting and canoeing.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans

When looking for accommodation, it is therefore worth deciding on your own priorities first. Those who want to combine museums, urban history and events will search differently from someone who wants to focus on the Cascata delle Marmore, paths through nature and activities on the water. The local cuisine includes Ciriole alla ternana: homemade long pasta made from water and flour, seasoned with garlic, olive oil and chilli pepper.

This results in different priorities for planning your trip: art and archaeology, water and nature, or regional cuisine. When choosing your holiday apartment, compare which type of trip best suits you and your fellow travellers.
