Torrita di Siena reveals its distinctive character where the historic centre, agricultural technology and various route connections come together.
Vertical farm in the historic centre
A public underground vertical farm is located in the historic centre of Torrita di Siena. It is considered Italy's first public underground vertical farm. Its agricultural technology can be observed up close. The underground location creates a contrast with the historic buildings and religious structures of the town centre.
Buildings in the historic centre
Palazzo Pretorio can be seen in Piazza Matteotti, in the heart of the historic centre. The Church of Sante Flora e Lucilla is Romanesque. The Madonna delle Nevi Temple was built in 1525. Palazzo Pretorio and the two religious buildings thus form three different architectural points of reference in the town.
Routes with different points of reference
The Sentiero del Vinsanto begins at the camper area of Torrita di Siena. It connects the medieval village with Montefollonico and leads to Porta Follonica. The Via Lauretana in Tuscany runs through the area of Torrita di Siena and connects Siena with Cortona via Asciano, Rapolano Terme, Sinalunga and Montepulciano. For route planning, the sequence of towns provides clear points of reference along the connection between Siena and Cortona. For a day plan, the starting point at the camper area and the sequence Torrita di Siena, Montefollonico and Porta Follonica can be treated as separate waypoints.
Museums, ruins and park
The surrounding area of Torrita di Siena includes the Museo della Tortura di Montepulciano, the Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Fratticciola, the ruins of Castello di Montelifrè, Palazzo Piccolomini and Parco Fucoli - PalaMontePaschi.
The wider regional surroundings
The wider regional area includes the Grotte paleolitiche di Belverde as well as the mountains Alta San Egidio and Monte Castiglion Maggio. The caves and the two mountains extend the landscape connection beyond the historic centre of Torrita di Siena.
Palio and singing
In the Palio dei Somari, the eight Contrade of Torrita di Siena compete against one another in a donkey race; each Contrada is represented by a donkey selected by drawing lots.
Singing is also associated with Torrita di Siena: the Concorso Internazionale di Canto Lirico Giulio Neri is open to singers from all over the world, without an age limit, and has been held in Torrita di Siena since 2005. Torrita di Siena thus combines a competition between the local Contrade with a singing competition for singers from all over the world.
