Fighine between castle, church and landscape

Fighine combines a castle complex with religious art; the surrounding area includes mountains, trails and other cultural attractions. The present-day inner castle of Castello di Fighine retains its square shape with three corner towers. Below it stands the Torre Vecchia, a significantly taller square tower.

Castello di Fighine and Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo

The defensive walls of Castello di Fighine are approximately 1.5 metres thick; small round towers interrupt them. Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo uses one of these towers as an apse. Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo has three architectural features: a single-nave layout, a rafter roof and a terracotta floor.

The furnishings of Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo are also worth a closer look. Behind the high altar is a painting of Saint Michael by Bonichi of Lucignano, dating from 1750. The church also contains paintings depicting saints from the Umbrian school of Orvieto and the Florentine school. For days devoted to culture, Fighine thus offers different perspectives on fortifications, sacred space and painting.

Historical traces and trails

Fighine was first mentioned in connection with the Pieve di Santa Maria de Fighine in the Placitum of 1058. In an edict of 1266, Emperor Frederick of Swabia granted Castello di Fighine to the Viscount of Campiglia. These two dates give the local history a clearly recognisable depth over time.

For orientation on site, visitors can park near Santa Maria delle Grazie outside the walls of Fighine and walk uphill to the main entrance. Inside the walls, small lanes and steps lead to Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo. The ascent to the main entrance is part of the outer route; afterwards, the small lanes and steps within the walls lead to the church. For a visit to the village, these two sections of the route can therefore be planned separately.

The Sentiero Le Fighine begins at a car park just outside the historic centre of San Casciano dei Bagni. On this trail stands Croce di Fighine, a wooden cross in a pine forest. This adds a specific trail destination and a nature-oriented landscape to the historical attractions.

Landscape, archaeology and museums

In the surroundings of Fighine is the Parco Archeologico Naturalistico Di Belvedere, an attraction considered an ancient site. Also in the surrounding area are the Grotte paleolitiche di Belverde, a cave, as well as Monte Cetona, Monte Spano and Monte Calcinaio, each of them a mountain.
