Holiday apartment in Frassini between cultural heritage and landscape

Frassini developed its present elongated form along the road that runs through the village. Frassini emerged in connection with the agricultural use of the land in Pian della Feccia and the Merse area. The history of the village is therefore linked both to its settlement pattern and to the use of the surrounding land.

Cultural heritage at the church and sanctuary

A prominent landmark in the village is the Chiesa di San Lorenzo a Frassini. Under Article 12 of Italian Legislative Decree 42/2004, it is designated as protected cultural heritage. At the same time, it is a parish church and is classified as part of the architectural heritage. The church is located in Località Frassini on the Strada Comunale di Frassini.

The Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie is located near Frassini. The sanctuary has its present structure dating from the 17th century; its interiors were altered in the 18th century. Numerous liturgical occasions are commemorated at the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie, including September 3 and Easter Monday. The building history and the liturgical occasions point to different periods that come together at the same sanctuary.

Landscape between the Montagnola Senese and the Merse Valley

Frassini, Chiusdino and Ciciano are considered ridge settlements along connecting routes in the Montagnola Senese and the Merse Valley. The Frassini–Chiusdino–Ciciano corridor forms part of the connecting routes between the ridge settlements of these two landscape areas. The regional landscape thus appears as a network of settlements, elevated areas and the roads connecting these places.

The historic route between Chiusdino and Frassini is also part of this context. It passes through the Porta Senese and follows the former road that connected Chiusdino with Siena. On the road from Chiusdino towards Frassini, you reach the Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie after about one kilometre. The approximate distance provides a rough orientation for this section without claiming an exact route length.

Walls, the Val di Merse and motocross

During a walk along the walls of Chiusdino, you can enjoy views over the Val di Merse. CHIUSDINOMXPARK is located in Località Frassini and is associated with motocross and enduro activities.

A cultural programme with a clearly defined time frame was planned for Frassini in July 2024: a virtual journey through past centuries featuring dwellings, burials and artefacts using 3D archaeology. Dwellings, burials and artefacts formed the specific subjects of the virtual presentation. The cultural programme combined these themes with a digital approach to past centuries.
