The Sentiero dell’acqua begins in the centre of Vivo d’Orcia and follows the Torrente Vivo towards Ermicciolo. Along the way, it passes traces of historic water-powered sawmills, ironworks and mills. The two trails therefore offer different points of reference for planning: one is designated as an approximately ten-kilometre walking trail, while the other connects the town centre with historic traces along the water.

Cultural heritage around Vivo d’Orcia

The Eremo was built on the ruins of a Camaldolese monastery founded by San Romualdo. Palazzo Cervini was remodelled based on a design by the Florentine architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. It is accessed via a stone bridge, beneath which the Torrente Vivo flows.

The small Oratorio San Benedetto, known as the Ermicciolo, is located near the springs along the trail. The church of Ermicciolo has simple Romanesque architecture, a single nave and a semicircular apse. Just a few steps from the church are the facilities of old chestnut dryers.

Exhibitions and local traditions

The exhibition at the Museo dell’Acqua includes photographs, projections, multimedia panels, exhibits and materials used to maintain the aqueduct. Another cultural facet is the Palio del Boscaiolo, a skills competition inspired by the traditional occupation of the woodcutter. It takes place in the medieval Borgo dell’Eremo.
