Holiday apartment in Campriano: History, Panoramas and Cycling

Campriano combines a distinctive history with sweeping landscapes and special experiences along the access road. The village is a historically significant castellare, built along the ancient route between Siena and the Maremma. Reliable records of Campriano have survived since 943. At the same time, Campriano was a village of free people connected to the nearby Via Francigena. Landscape Between Streams and Wide Horizons

Campriano lies at the confluence of two small streams. The larger one, the Stile, flows into the Arbia River near Buonconvento. Springs are also part of the immediate surroundings of the buildings: the “i Pozzini” spring rises directly below the buildings of Campriano and is said to still be in use. The “la Vena” spring is located a very short distance from the buildings of Campriano; it too is said to still be in use.

From Campriano, there are sweeping panoramic views across the Crete Senesi, the Val d’Orcia and Amiata as far as the outline of Chianti. Campriano is also a 350-hectare agricultural estate that produces wine and olive oil.

Access, Panoramic Road and Cycling

The public secondary road Via Vicinale di Campriano runs from the municipal boundary with Monteroni d’Arbia along the Stile stream to the Campriano district and is 0.600 kilometres long. From Siena to Campriano, the route can follow 10 kilometres of gravel road on the SP34Bis along the panoramic ridges of the Crete Senesi. The secondary road along the Stile and the gravel section from the direction of Siena form different parts of the route to Campriano.

The “Strade Bianche” event for professional cyclists takes place on the route to Campriano. “L’Eroica” for enthusiasts of historic cycling is also held along the same access route. The shared course links the approach to two different cycling traditions.

Fortifications, Castle and Church Art

The surviving fortifications of Campriano include two levels of walls, an upper pentagonal level and the remains of two towers. Campriano Castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times before it was destroyed in 1368.

Another cultural highlight is the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Campriano. It has preserved a large part of its older structure. Inside are frescoes depicting the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary. The left altar preserves wall paintings from the late 16th century whose narrative tone recalls Ventura Salimbeni. Inside the church, the frescoes and the wall paintings of the left altar meet.
