Holiday apartment in Monachino – nature, history and trails in the Limentra Valley

Monachino lies at an altitude of around 700 m, where the narrow valley of the eastern Limentra widens considerably. This creates space for extensive grazing areas and a landscape that has made the village appear open and distinctive from the very beginning.

Monachino’s location combines a distinctive landscape with several historical connections. The broad grazing areas give way to historic traces in the village, routes to excursion destinations and extensive woodland landscapes.

Church, ironworks and an unusual metal wheel

At the end of the 16th century, an ironworks commissioned by the Grand Duke of Tuscany was operating in Monachino. Another prominent feature of the village is the church dedicated to Saint Pope Stephen, which dates from 1838.

At Ponte de' Bianchi stands a metal wheel built in the immediate post-war period, with a horizontal axle and several blades. It used the water supply of an earlier mill wheel with a vertical axle and generated electricity for the Monte la Croce military area and Monachino.

Pian del Toro in the Limentra Valley also has a complex past. An oratory stood there that was initially dependent on Fontana Taona Abbey and later belonged to the Florentine Pazzi family. This historical sequence gives the hamlet its own distinct historical connection, different from the church in Monachino and the former ironworks.

Excursions along paths and mule tracks

From Monachino, good paths and mule tracks provide access to the Rifugio Pacini-La Rasa and the Cascina di Spedaletto-Acquerino.

Sasso del Consiglio lies a few hundred metres from Monachino and features numerous rock carvings. Together with the historic buildings and technical remains, this provides another specific reason to view the surrounding area not only from a landscape perspective but also in terms of cultural history.

An excursion may lead to the Rifugio Pacini-La Rasa or the Cascina di Spedaletto-Acquerino; at Sasso del Consiglio, by contrast, the rock carvings are the main focus as a feature of cultural history. In the protected area, forests, clearings and archaeological traces add to the scene.

Foresta dell’Acquerino: forests and archaeological traces

The Foresta dell’Acquerino nature reserve is characterised by extensive forests dominated by centuries-old beech trees and grass-covered clearings. The combination of woodland and open areas creates a landscape theme that clearly differs from the expansiveness of the grazing areas around Monachino.

The Foresta dell’Acquerino also contains an archaeological park that is part of the Itinerario della Pietra of the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese. The Centro di Educazione Ambientale di Acquerino is located at Località Monachino, 51020.
