Sammommè lies near the source of the Ombrone Pistoiese River, at around 555 metres above sea level. The houses are scattered among the surrounding forests, which are characterised by lush chestnut groves. Summer festival for families and music lovers

A special date is the San Mommè Color Park 2026. The tenth edition will transform the Parco Giochi Camilla in Sammommè into a summer festival with games and activities for everyone, especially children. Live music and performances by Auroro Borealo, Mille Lire and Thomaze DJ are also scheduled until late in the evening. Alongside its landscape and historical attractions, the village therefore also takes on a festive character.

Pieve, organ and a long village history

The village of Sammommè developed around the Pieve di San Matteo. The church was elevated to the status of a pieve by a decree issued by Bishop Colombino Bassi on 9 April 1726 during a pastoral visit; at that time, it was led by parish priest Giovanni Morelli. Its dedication suggests that its foundation dates back to the 7th century.

A record from 1086 mentions land in Sancto Mamme that Bishop Pietro had granted as a fief to a loyal follower. The church also contains an Agati–Tronci organ from the late 19th century. It has 56 manual keys, 16 pedal keys and 16 stops—specific details for visitors who also want to discover sacred spaces through their furnishings.

Hikes and challenging routes

The Sentiero delle Stazioni between Sammommè and Piteccio offers hikers close-up views of the hydraulic engineering structures of the Ferrovia Porrettana. The itinerary “In treno sulla Linea Gotica” combines the train journey from Pistoia to Pracchia with a hike to Sammommè and the return journey by train to Pistoia. The circular route from Sammommè also begins in the village’s main square. At Pian di Giuliano, it reaches the first fountain for refilling drinking bottles. The routes described therefore appeal to different interests, from a hike with views of historic railway structures to more sport-oriented sections.

Oratories, castle ruins and traces of the Gothic Line

The first houses clustered around the small Pian di Ripalta oratory, known as Il Chiesino, which is located in the hamlet of Savaiana. Above Sammommè stand the remains of Castello di Batoni, associated with former episcopal holdings and the legend of Selvaggia dei Vergiolesi. According to tradition, she is said to have stayed there while fleeing.

The Gothic Line crossed the area between Pistoia and Pracchia, extending as far as Sammommè, at several points. Some little-known remains have survived there. Together with the Sentiero delle Stazioni, this historical theme connects trails, railway landscapes and local history, without implying that they form a single circular route.
