Industrial history and sacred architecture

In Campo Tizzoro, the former industrial facilities of the Società Metallurgica Italiana, built there in 1911, now house the Museo e Rifugi SMI. This example of industrial archaeology also includes the air-raid shelters. The industrial past also shaped the development of the village: between 1935 and 1942, Campo Tizzoro acquired its definitive urban form through the creation of a workers' village and the facilities needed by the community around the factory.

The workers' village included 11 four-family houses for workers and managers, 28 two-family houses and 22 single-family houses. The single-family houses were inaugurated on 29 August 1942; all the houses had a garden and a coach house.

The church of Santa Barbara and San Luigi Gonzaga was consecrated on 23 August 1940. It is dedicated to Santa Barbara, the patron saint of powder magazines, as well as to San Luigi Gonzaga. The rationalist sacred building, with a Romanesque-Gothic appearance, has 16 side windows and a rafter roof covered with copper plates. It was built according to a design by the architect Ottavio Marchetti.

Hiking and winter trails around Campo Tizzoro

The experience Ritorno a Campo Tizzoro: i Rifugi SMI combines a hike with a guided tour of the SMI Museum, the workers' village, the church of Santa Barbara and San Luigi Gonzaga, the Gothic Line and the sites of the Second World War.

The 16th stage of the Romea Strata also leads to Campo Tizzoro towards the end and then continues along the Torrente Maresca to Pontepetri. A snowshoe route approximately 13 km long begins in Campo Tizzoro and runs along Sentiero 00 and the Alta Via dei Parchi.

Forest and cycling along a historic route

In the municipality of San Marcello Piteglio, the Foresta del Teso is predominantly characterised by tall beech, chestnut and fir trees; the Torrente Maresca runs through it. For cyclists, the tour Sui binari della storia follows the original route of the former Ferrovia Alto Pistoiese. From Pracchia, the cycling tour reaches Campo Tizzoro via a paved road through a section of the Valle del Reno.
