Gello: Discover Churches, Aqueduct Traces and Mountains

In Gello, sacred architecture and traces of the past landscape come together. The Chiesino di Gello preserves its original medieval layout, while the parish church of S. Giovanni is a 19th-century building with neo-Renaissance forms. The transition from the medieval layout to the neo-Renaissance forms of the 19th century is already visible in two churches.

East of Via di Gello, traces of the Roman Caldaccoli aqueduct can be seen in fields running parallel to the road. There are also small bridges over Medici-Lorraine waterworks, some of which preserve structural elements from the 17th and 18th centuries. The rural architecture also contributes to Gello’s character. Farmhouses from the 18th century have been preserved at Rete, as well as at Cascine di Gello. The house of Ulisse Dini is part of the noteworthy architecture in the Gello area. In the hamlet of Castelletto, the site of the medieval fortification of Fratta di Gello, dating from 1180, can be identified.

San Cristoforo in Bottano can be identified as an existing church in the western part of Gello, beyond the railway. The Chiesa di San Cristoforo di Bottano is a subsidiary church and an architectural heritage site. The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista preserves the 18th-century painting Madonna del Sacro Cuore. The church of S. Giovanni di Campolungo is also documented as early as 1187. Together, these buildings represent different forms of sacred heritage, from historical dating to a preserved work of art.

The wall monument Lapide ai Caduti di Gello consists of two light-colored stone plaques on an ochre-plastered façade. The lower, wide rectangular plaque displays dense columns of names and dates. Above it are a small lamp and a large metal laurel wreath in relief. The façade thus combines inscribed surfaces with sculptural elements.
