Discover Tripalle: Local History and Regional Destinations
Tripalle is situated on a tuff hill on the right bank of the Isola stream. The Isola stream lies west of Tripalle. The main attractions here are local history, ecclesiastical heritage and destinations in the surrounding area and further afield.
Church, Pilgrimage Route and Medieval Traces
The parish church of Santi Jacopo e Cristoforo in Tripalle is a medieval church; it was renovated and remodelled in the 19th century. The church houses a 14th-century Madonna and Child with Saints Torpè and Antonio, attributed to Neri di Nello.
The parish church is also designated as a stop on a pilgrimage route dedicated to Saint James. The historical topography includes a terrace wall on the northwestern slope of Poggio Soave. In the Middle Ages, it formed part of the access route to Tripalle Castle, which stood on the summit plateau.
Villa Ott and the History of Tripalle
Villa Ott, formerly Villa Filicheto, was built in the 18th century by the architect Silvestro Donati for the Pisan aristocratic Mecherini family. Its main façade faces the town of Tripalle. The villa complex includes the Oratorio di San Isidoro e della Madonna del Cuore, which was rebuilt in 1768 on the remains of an older church.
Below Tripalle, on the right bank of the Isola River, stood the former Pieve di San Giovanni in Val d’Isola; it has not survived. A document dated 29 April 907 mentions the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista e San Martino in Tripallo. A papal bull dated 8 September 1153 confirmed the possessions in the castle and the court district of Tripalle to the Primatial Chapter of Pisa.
