Latignano combines a church documented since the Middle Ages, historic traces in the townscape and festivals featuring a procession, blessing and regional specialities. Those who explore the town will therefore find various ways to discover its history: sacred art, a cemetery with its own chapel, visible traces of Roman centuriation and events where religious tradition and communal dining come together.

Churches with a long history

The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Latignano has been documented since 1217. Its history therefore goes back considerably further than the present state of the building. The parish church of Latignano was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century. This building thus brings together several historical layers: the early documentary reference, the later rebuilding and the furnishings of the church interior.

Particularly noteworthy is the high altar made of polychrome marble. It previously stood in the Pieve di Vicopisano and was later moved to the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Latignano. The altar is therefore not merely a furnishing element, but also points to the connection between various religious sites in the surrounding area. Cemetery, chapel and historic artworks

The cemetery of Latignano is open from 1 October to 30 April from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and from 1 May to 30 September from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The opening hours therefore vary according to the season and should be taken into account when planning a visit.

The cemetery contains a chapel with a 19th-century statue depicting the Madonna delle Anime Sante del Purgatorio. A marble plaque in the cemetery formerly housed an image of the Madonna del Soccorso from the 14th century. The former function of the plaque is part of the town’s historical tradition and must be clearly distinguished from the statue in the chapel described today.

Festivals with procession, blessing and specialities

The Festa e Palio del Carretto takes place at the Spazio Feste festival grounds on Via Ciro Menotti in Latignano. On the eve, the participants parade through the streets of Latignano to Piazza della Chiesa. After the service, the carts and participants are blessed there. The programme therefore combines a procession through the town with a religious element in Piazza della Chiesa.

The Festa e Palio del Carretto also has its own culinary profile: it offers dishes based on duck and tripe. Another event is the Festa del maiale e della birra. The fourth edition took place over two weekends in July, from 10 to 12 July and from 17 to 19 July, at Spazio Feste on Via Ciro Menotti. From 7:30 p.m., the food stand offered draught beer, pork knuckle, porchetta and grilled specialities.

Roman traces in the townscape

Traces of Roman centuriation are still visible in Latignano today. Together with the church, cemetery and festivals, they create a townscape where sacred history, historical memory, Roman traces and living event traditions meet within a small area.
