Casa Rocchino – Trails, History and Nature
Casa Rocchino is one of the small settlement groups that make up nearby Adelano. Adelano is a scattered valley settlement crossed by the Torrente Adelano of the same name; at its centre stands the church of Santa Maria Maddalena. The districts, including Casa Rocchino, are generally arranged around a single farmstead and scattered houses facing the slope. The settlement landscape follows the valley, the nearby ridge and the ascent to Monte Gottero.
Trails, Elevations and Historic Places
The high-altitude settlements of Adelano developed near a route linking the upper Lunigiana with Val di Vara and facilitating connections with Liguria. A winding road connects several districts; steep side roads climb towards Monte Gottero. Long gravel roads, including a circular route, cross Pian del Merlo, lead up a steep ascent in hairpin bends to Pian di Berceto and then reconnect at an almost constant elevation of about 1,250 metres with the main road. Nearby Formentara is an old mountain pasture village at an elevation of 1,120 metres, characterised by masonry huts with roofs made of “piagne”, flat roofing elements made from local stone.
The nearby AV2 of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri passes over Bocca del Lupo, Monte Gottero, Foce dei Tre Confini, Pian del Merlo, Casa Biagi, the bridge over the Torrente Adelano and Passo Calzavitello. The Alta Via also includes a variant for equestrian tourism that passes through Chiusola. Chiusola is a medieval rural settlement with 16th-century houses and castle ruins. Foce dei Tre Confini is an old pass and was a border point between the states of Parma, Tuscany and Genoa that existed before Italian unification.
Stretti di Giaredo Natural Area
The nearby Stretti di Giaredo are a gorge on the Torrente Gordana between Pontremoli and Zeri. The Stretti di Giaredo and the Valle del Torrente Gordana belong to the Natura 2000 network and are designated as a Special Protection Area under the name “Valle del Torrente Gordana”. The most easily accessible section of the gorge is about 1 kilometre long.
Church, Pilgrimage Route and Regional History
Nearby Adelano is home to the Franciscan hermitage of Santa Maria Maddalena, near the borders of Tuscany with Emilia and Liguria. It lies on the Chemin d’Assise and also accommodates people walking this pilgrimage route. Construction of the bell tower of the church of Santa Maria Maddalena began in 1886 and was not completed until towards the end of the 19th century. Adelano also had a historic weaving tradition, producing an indigo-blue work fabric called “büdana”.
